"Better Business Relations," as a caption, epitomizes the change of attitude of the recently installed regime in Washington from that of its predecessors over the past twenty years. Coincidentally, "Better Business Relations" was the subject of an important address given by Jim Shevlin before the 64th Annual Convention of Western Retail Implement and Hardware Dealers held at the Municipal Auditorium at Kansas City, Mo., in January of this year. As you know, Jim is industrial relations head of Deere & Company, one of the nation's principal manufacturers of farm implements. In Jim's talk he emphasized the importance of sound personnel relations as well as proper relations between manufacturers and customers. Among other things, he stated that employees should be kept informed on how they are getting along. Credit should be given where it is due. He recommended that employees should be informed in advance of any changes contemplated in their employment. Sound employee relations, in his opinion, must be bottomed upon a practice of (1) getting the facts, (2) weighing and deciding upon a course of action, (3) taking action, and (4) obtaining and appraising the results. In addition to a write-up and summary of Jim's talk, the January 31 issue of Implement Tractor Magazine carried a picture of Jim. Parenthetically, life in Moline, Ill., with his wife, the former Adaline Chase Peek, and their two daughters, Stephanie and Adaline, seems to agree with Jim, for he appears today as handsome as he did when, as president of the Dartmouth Players, he charmed many a Hanover audience with his talents on the stage.

From the city o£ brotherly love comes thefollowing interesting report by Bob Coltman,Vice President, Trust Division:

"My nose has been so close to my adventurous new grindstone, the Trust Division of the Philadelphia National Bank, that there has been little opportunity to pick up class gossip this past year. I hear via Natalie, who is a patient of GeorgeHahn's, that he is classified I-A, which seems a little on the ridiculous side as to the best use of manpower of a highly specialized and skilled type.

"Saw Dave K.irby on a brief visit here last summer, but you knowthe news of him better than I. Talked with Warren Moore by phone the other day in his new Park Avenue Temple of Soap (Lever Brothers). He has five kids now (last time he counted them).

"A card from Hatcher in London reports all s well there, and Ed Marks turns up with a new (to me) address, as follows: 12 Kotzia, Ellenken, Athens, Greece. I have no other details.

"Our family (Natalie; Bob, a sophomore in George School; Alan, in sixth grade locally; and I) are still aglow over the best week's skiing we ve had in years, at Stowe the week following Christmas. Conditions and weather were literally excellent and the boys showed much more progress than is ever possible in the nearby attempts at Pocono skiing. The new National Trail is an awesome thing but rather fun if you don't care how slowly you get down it. Having outstandingly the best conditions in the East at that-time, Stowe was jammed to sleeping-on-the-floor capacity."

Paul Fox, partner of the New York law firm of Cahill, Gordon, Zachry and Reindel, has been working recently with Jus Stanley '33, new Vice President of the College, in analyzing and setting up practices and procedures for interesting more testators in becoming donors of the College. Congratulations, Paul, and good luck in this very important work!

Deputy Comptroller of the State of New York is the position to which Milt Alpert was appointed by Governor Dewey as of January 5. This assignment carries with it the responsibility for the New York State Employees' Retirement System. During the past two years, Milt has been a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Interstate Cooperation. He has also occupied the positions of executive secretary and counsel to the State Defense Council and general counsel to the State Civil Defense Commission. Milt is a member of the Legal Committee of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission, a member of the Drafting Committee of State Officials of the Council of State Governments, and a member of the Legal Committee of the Interstate Civil Defense Compact. With this weath of experience and multitude of responsible positions in the field of government over an extended period of time, it causes no great surprise to learn that Milt was one of the principal draftsmen of the New York State Defense Emergency Act of 1951.

Another member of our class, who happens to be a lawyer and has the name of Milt, namely, Milton G. Wheeler, has, during the past several months, been serving as director of the State of Maine District Office of Price Stabilization. Prior to his appointment to the OPS position, Milt was in general practice in Portland as a member of the law firm of Wheeler and Pomeroy. He has also been serving as an associate professor of law of Port- land University and special assistant to the United States District Attorney in Portland.
