The Dartmouth tennis team's swing through the sunny South produced only one victory in seven matches, but Coach Red Hoehn was by no means disheartened by the results and was quick to point out that many matches were very close affairs and that the opposition, which included teams like the University of North Carolina, was pretty highly regarded.

"The boys played well," commented Red. "In fact, they played much better than I thought they would. Fellows like Stew Stearns, Captain Bill Crotty and Steve Fast had a lot of tight matches which they might have won if they'd had a chance to practice before we went south."

The Big Green's lone win came against the University of the South on April 2 when they won by a 5-4 margin. The losses were to Presbyterian College 11-4, Davidson 9-2, Duke 10-4, Kalamazoo 5 4, North Carolina, just about the top-ranked tennis squad in collegiate circles, which twice scored 15-0 wins over the Green.

The playing order for the southern junket had Stew Stearns, a junior, playing number one, Captain Bill Crotty, the only veteran, ranked second, and Steve Fast, a newcomer to the varsity, in third place. Three sophomores Ralph Blount. Dan Anzel and Doug Archibald rank in that order, with senior Tom Hess in seventh place followed by Fred Pessl, another sophomore, and Fred Carleton. Bennett Rogers is ranked tenth, but is expected to move up before the season advances very far.

With only one veteran and with a squad composed largely of sophomores, it would seem that the 1953 tennis team at Dartmouth will fall a long way below last year's fine team which was ranked first in New England and second in the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Coach Red Hoehn says, "We've got some good possibilities, but I'm afraid that it will take a lot of practice and seasoning before most of these sophomores develop into real tennis players. Actually, the team has come along faster than I thought they would, but of course, it's nothing like last year."
