The death of Herbert Edwin Gage occurred October 25, after a brief illness, at the age of 89. The principal facts of his life are reported in the In Memoriam section of this MAGAZINE.

I wish to add in these Class Notes my personal remembrances of Herbert. We both were country boys on small farms each like an only child little farming, just going to school; three years in the same high school; four years close friends in college; in our married lives seeing one another a few times each year; and during the past twelve years, both widowers. We saw each other at regular times during the year, and were conspicuous at Commencements as old grads.

The first sizable group of students to go from Newburyport to Dartmouth were: Eaton, Gage, Rogers, Sanborn and Welch. We all located in Rum Hollow freshman year, but scattered later. All stayed to graduate in '87. Gage and I remained in New England and strengthened our friendship over the years.

The last two years of his life he was '87 Class Agent and for 1953 he produced excellent results - contributions from our six living members 100%, and an average amount of $130 per member. He was a strong supporter of Dartmouth, and through the years has been a liberal contributor to the Alumni Fund.

In the last few years of his life he had no close relatives alive, but he had devoted relatives by marriage. I visited him ten days be- fore his death, and Bartlett '89 and I attended his funeral services.
