Stephen Chase has written a noble Hymnto Dartmouth. This was printed in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, Dec. 1952. Suitable music was presented by Herbert A. Dingwall '16.

Paul R. Zeller, director of the Dartmouth Glee Club, writes me under date of January 8:

"We finally decided on a setting of the Stephen Chase poem. This music was written by Herbert A. Dingwall Sr., Glass of 1916. I arranged the music for male voices and the Glee Club sang the song at the House Party Concert in November. We had a recording made at the time and sent a copy to Mr. Dingwall in New York.

"On Christmas morning, Mrs. Chase presented a copy of the music which I made, together with a copy 'of the recording, to your classmate, Stephen Chase."

In his letter dated January 3, 1954, Steve wrote to Mr. Zeller, "Mrs. Chase, through several means of secrecy until Christmas morning, gave me one of the most happy holidays I have ever had with the Glee Club record of the Hymn to Dartmouth. You were most kind in securing it for us and we very deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness. The Glee Club certainly interpreted the music and words in full understanding of the sentiments intended to be expressed. Beautifully done!

"Of course, it is but natural that one should feel a certain measure of pride and happiness that one's efforts can meet with approval, as apparently this has done. Could I ask you for one more tax on your time in sending me the address of Mr. Dingwall, so that I may express to him my admiration and appreciation of the wonderful music he arranged, that makes this hymn possible and, may I say, presentable. Very sincerely, Stephen Chase."

Mr. Zeller continues, in his letter to the Secretary, "So that is the complete story as of today. If you hadn't made the suggestion that the Chase poem be printed, we could never have succeeded in bringing the happiness to your friend and classmate that we did. I enjoyed the small part I played in this totally pleasant chain of events, and I know Jib Dingwall and his son, H. Allan Jr., did too. So now - take a bow, Mr. Ham, - you started the chain."
