I understand that the joint '40-'41 cocktail party held at the Dartmouth Club in New York on January 22 was a headline affair. Although something happened to yours truly on that day which made me forget the shindig, fortunately many less forgetful '41s were on hand. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs.Jack McMillin, Mr. and Mrs. George Seel, Dr.and Mrs. Karl Blume, Mr. and Mrs. MarstonGibbs, Don Brown, Bill Danforth, Dave McKinney, Eddie Acker, and Stu May. Now that's a right good turn-out.

There aren't many newspaper clippings to report this month, in fact just one item taken from the front page of the Worcester (Mass.) Gazette. Burt Hedin has joined the ranks of those who are migrating to California. He has resigned as treasurer of the Worcester County Institution for Savings and has joined the McMillan Mortgage Co. of California, one of the West's largest mortgage specialists. No, Burt will not be the villain with the mustache who forecloses the mortgage on Little Nell - he s going to be executive vice president. Burt and his family will live in Oxnard, Calif., temporarily and then move on to Beverly Hills. Is that anywhere near Marilyn Monroe?

Visitors to Hanover in January included Ez Crowley and son from Danvers, Mass. Could it be that Ez is trying to acquaint the young lad with Spaulding Pool? Another trip to Hanover was made in January by Bill Philbrook. Bill is getting to be a commuter between Newton, Mass., and the Hanover Plain. As previously reported in these notes, Bill was up there in November so I assume it's the skiing that keeps him coming back for more. Ah, what a break. Oh well, Hall, your chance will come in May.

I've got news about a lot of people, so let's start with John Ahlgren. John is living in Jackson Heights, N. Y., and is with the Lumberman's Mutual Casualty Company in New York. Now that Alumni Fund time is rolling around again I am reminded of the fact that John did a swell job of helping out locally on the Fund-raising drive last year. Doing the job well on a local basis guarantees the success of the national operation. Bud Martin, ye Class Agent, has already sent out an S.O.S. for local Agents to help him with the 1954 campaign. If you're interested, drop me a line and I'll ask Bud to contact you.

Princeton, N.J., is now the home of DickOtter. Dick is a visiting member of the Department of Mathematics at Princeton this year, on leave for a year from the math dept. at Notre Dame. Dick has a three-year-old girl and a baby boy whom he guarantees will not be led astray to either Princeton or N.D. Someone who is practically a neighbor of mine is Jack Ripley of Cedarhurst, L.I. Jack teaches social studies at Mepham High School in Bellmore and is married to the former Joan Robbins, a graduate of Earlham College in Indiana. In case you haven't heard of Mepham, that's the school which is to wrestling what the Yankees are to baseball. (And believe me, it pains me to admit it.) Jack tells me he's staying out of wrestling and concentrating on something much saner - music. He plays the viola and the French horn in local circles.

Speaking of music, Class Treasurer StewSteffey sends me a note from Joe Kipe, saxophonist extraordinaire, who is in Caracas with the Venezuelan Atlantic Refining Co. Joe apologizes for being late sending in his class dues but reports that he didn't get Stew's billet doux until December, which leads Joe to ask if it was sent to Venezuela by bottle:

"We continue to enjoy (and to thrive on) life in this continually amazing city. Even my golf has shown some improvement'. Incidentally, don't be misled by all that you read in Time; not everyone who comes to Venezuela gets rich. Still see PeteJacobsen quite regularly; our children attend the same school. We both see the daily Dartmouth quite regularly now, courtesy of John Tansey '57 from Caracas."

Here's news from someone who hasn't been mentioned in these notes since I took over from Don Stillman nearly three years ago. (Time really skips by!) Everett Lord-Wood is now an associate with the firm of A. Carl Stelling, site planning consultants. He's in charge of the new branch office in New Haven, Conn. Still an avid skier, Everett is mighty happy to be inching his way into New England again. From Denver, Colo., comes word that StewWallace, a transplanted Long Islander, received his Ph.D. in geology in June 1953 from the University of Michigan and is now with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver. (Boy would he murder that rock quiz now! Are you listening, Abe Lydecker and Fred Lynch?) Incidentally, I haven't heard from my old roomie Lydecker in many, many a moon. How about a communique from out Jersey way?

Another Long Islander who is not transplanted warrants a mention here and now. VicSchneider has just gone into business as Patti Jane Lingerie Corp., 105 Madison Ave., New York, manufacturers of children's underwear. Yes, Patti Jane is the name of Vic's daughter. Every time I think of Vic I think of the time we sat up all night at the Tenth Reunion and he kept us hysterical till sun-up. Two more years and we'll have more of the same.

Dick Jachens writes from Arlington, Va., and I assume he is still in the Army although he gives no title:

"Haven't seen any classmates down here but dropped in on Don Taber in Lebanon last summer. He's a very busy hardware merchant up there. The Tabers and Jachens also got together with Bob Mensel and his family at Lake Sunapee for a swell picnic. Bob is with Markem Machine Co. in Keene and just bought a nice house there. I have my orders for Ft. Devens, Mass., in January so expect to see more Dartmouth men there."

You can see why I assume Dick is still in the Army.

Jim Eckels writes from Ogden, Utah, that the skiing is terrific. I quote: "Robb Alexander is here selling for Allen Steel Co. of Salt Lake City. We've shared picnics and camp-outs on Mt. Ogden and are enthused by 1954 plans to extend the ski-lift another mile to the top of the gooo-foot peak. Our skiing is forty minutes from the front door. Come on out and try it." P.S. Jim is still in the mortgage loan business.

It's nice to hear from you fellows who take the time to drop me an occasional note. Those of you who seldom if ever send any news this way can help out by changing your ways and letting me know what's cooking. Remember to be good to your class secretary, because you never know who's going to be elected to this job at the Fifteenth Reunion. It might even be you! Not even The Shadow knows.

HAPPILY FENCED IN: Rob Barstow '41 is shown with his wife Meg, Daniel 2, Mary 9, and David 6, in the yard of their home in Wethersfield, Conn.

Secretary, Albert Frank - Guenther Law, Inc. 131 Cedar St., New York, N.Y.
