There's an old Indian legend that says every time I go on any kind of a trip I bump into a classmate. We kid about it at home but the truth is that it always happens. This time I thought the spell was broken because on April 24 when I was boarding TWA for the flight to Kennedy I had been gone five weeks around the world and hadn't met a classmate. We fastened seat belts, sped down the runway and as we zoomed upward I looked at the guy sitting across the aisle from me and realized that the legend hadn't been broken.

When the "unfasten seat belts" sign was flashed I got up and asked him three questions. "Didn't you go to Dartmouth?" "Weren't you a '41?" "Isn't your first name Jim?" All he could say was "My God what a memory!" It was Jim Wallace and we hadn't seen each other in 25 years. Jim's running his own management consulting business, Wallace Associates with headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. He spends a great deal of his time outside of the United States where he has a number of prominent clients. He was returning home following a project of several weeks' duration in Europe. Jim continued to be amazed that I remembered him so quickly but I told him of the advantage I had - the old Indian legend that says I meet a classmate anytime I make a trip.

In answer to the inquiry we made of FredLeopold in the March issue regarding the outcome of the election for City Council in Beverly Hills, Calif., the following from Fred was on hand upon my return to New York: ". . . the good voters of Beverly Hills, in the exercise of their ultimate wisdom, saw fit to put me in office as one of their councilmen. I must say it's been a rewarding experience." Congratulations, Your Honor.

Fred Cluthe makes the news through his being elected a director of the Short Hills National Bank in Short Hills, N. J. Fred is the owner of Strohmeyer and Arpe Company, importers and exporters of consumer foods and industrial waxes. After graduating from Dartmouth, he attended the Harvard Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Following his work as research chemist for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, he was in the executive department of Gulf Oil Corporation until he took over his present business. I'm pleased to have this chance to write about Fred because he has always been an active alumnus. This year he worked on the interviewing of applicants for the next freshman class. Active in local affairs, too, Fred is director and president of The Short Hills Association and member of the executive council of the Milburn-Short Hills Community Council.

Larry Thompson, who is Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Boston Gas Company. Larry received his M.B.A. from Harvard in 1948 and a Ph.D. in Economics in 1951.

The Class had two successful get-togethers on the West Coast recently thanks in large measure to the efforts of Wes Hadden and Dr. Bill Clark. Wes arranged a luncheon for '41s in the Los Angeles area and then teamed up with Bill to plan a dinner for '41s and their wives in San Francisco. Among those who attended were DickCords, the old Poly Prep swimming and lacrosse star, who is now a lawyer and labor relations consultant with his home in Long Beach, Calif. Also on hand were Dr. HyzerJones, Dr. Elmer Crehan, Waring Carrington, and Bruce Brown. Plans were discussed for chartering an airplane next summer for the trip to Hanover for the 25th Reunion. The thought was to fly from L.A. or San Francisco to Boston with stops at St. Louis and perhaps Chicago where other '41s could get on board. Those of you on the Coast or the other cities mentioned who might be interested in such a flight can let me have their names and addresses and I'll see that they are kept up-to-date on plans.

For those of you traveling on the West Coast, let me call your attention to The Inn at Rancho Sante Fe, a most delightful inn run by Wes Hadden and his wife. It is located near San Diego and La Jolla and is a great place to have business meetings or spend a vacation. Next time you're in the area plan to stop in and see Wes (you can't miss him he's still 6' 6").

Dr. Bill Clark now lives in Mill Valley near San Francisco and is very active in local community affairs, Boy Scouts, etc. Bill's wife is also a doctor and they are planning to attend the 25th Reunion with their children.

That's it for another year ... your class secretary now gets his summer vacation. Next column will be written in September and in the meantime send me lots of news. So, one last look at what happened TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AGO THIS MONTH. ... (This part of the column has been getting good comment but I must apologize for April's bit of history when I left Monk Larson's name off the championship Phil Delt bridge team.) ... 500 seniors received B.A. degrees. ... Tim Takaro and Larry Thompson were first and second in the class. ... George Sexton pitched the Big Green to a 3-2 win over Cornell in the final baseball game of the year. ... Pete Keir delivered the valedictory to the Colleg.
