Since the last report in these columns the Dartmouth basketball team has played six games, five of which were league encounters. In these six contests the Indians have split even, winning three and losing three. During the most recent weekend the Indians played a better brand of ball than they had displayed for a month. On two successive days Dartmouth defeated Brown 68-64 and Harvard 68-59, meeting both teams away from Hanover. Against the Bruins Dartmouth trailed by as much as 12 points in the first half, but fought back in the final periods with an amazing 56% shooting average to win. Captain Pete Geithner established a new Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League record when he collected thirteen assists to eclipse the ten-assist mark set by Roger Chadwick of Cornell in 1951. Geithner also leads the league in this department with a 6.o-per-game average.
In both the Brown and Harvard games guard Glenn Wilson, now completely recovered from a fractured wrist, hit for 18 points. The 68-59 win over Harvard and the Brown victory gave the Indians undisputed possession of fifth place in the league. Especially pleasing was the showing of reserve center Dick Fairley against the Crimson. The 6'4" junior hit for 21 points and was very effective on rebounds. Fairley has been developing steadily this season as a replacement for Paul Wisdom.
Wisdom is still the top scorer for Dartmouth with just under 15 points per game, but he is being pressed by Ken Patterson (13 points) and Glenn Wilson, who has climbed up steadily and is now hitting at better than a 12-point clip. Wilson's average is actually the best on the club if the amount of time he has played is taken into consideration. Captain Pete Geithner ranks fourth in scoring with a 10 points per game, followed by John Parker and Gene Givens.
The Indians, since last report, lost as was expected to Holy Cross 82-67, and were defeated by Penn 78-67. Then Dartmouth defeated Princeton in a Winter Carnival game 60-50, but slumped badly to lose to Yale 84-74 before recovering to defeat Brown and Harvard as reported.
Coach Doggie Julian has done some experimenting with the squad, using both Wisdom and Fairley at a double pivot and juggling forward replacements around in an effort to improve the team shooting. Most of these efforts have not paid off and the team has borne out an earlier statement by Julian: "This is not a great club, but it is a team that can win if they want to hustle."
