The varsity baseball team moved into the Southland in late March, meeting eleven teams. For the past several weeks the team has been working out in the Alumni Gymnasium cage and all signs point to a fine season. Coach Tony Lupien has six lettermen returning, led by Captain George "Woody" Woodruff, who will handle the catching duties. The other lettermen are pitcher Roger Hanlon, and five infielders - Jerry Foote or John King at first base, Roger McArt at second base, Chuck Kaufman at shortstop, and Dick Marrone at third base. In the outfield should be senior Dan Cilo in right field, sophomore Bill Quirk, brother of last year's top hurler, Art Quirk, in centerfield, and Carl Jaeger, another sophomore, in left field. Other top-rated pitchers include Don O'Neill, Rog Schaefer, Ed Toothaker and Bob Van Dam.

Coach Tom Dent took his lacrosse team southward to play a four-game schedule and get in some needed outdoor practice in hopes of bettering last year's 8-4 record. The team has a good nucleus of returning lettermen, but Coach Dent has had to make some shifts to plug the gaps left by the graduation of All-American goalie Randy Malin and All-American defenseman Bill Morton. Captain Dick Chase, a midfielder, has been switched to goal and veteran John Tuerk has been moved from midfield to defense. Also on defense will be Bill Sly, a junior, and sophomore Joe Williams. At midfield are veterans John Goyette, Jack Hodgson, Sam Mc- Murtrie, Al Rozycki and Ron Wybranow ski, along with two promising sophomores Dave Usher and Mike Slive.

The Big Green attack line is rated stronger than either defense or midfield. Back are seniors Jack Patterson and Spike Hamilton, and Pat Walsh, a junior. Patterson and Walsh are consistent scorers, while Hamilton is a good feeder. Sophomore John Walters is another top prospect for the attack line.

Hoping to better last season's 5-4 record, the Dartmouth varsity golf team under Coach Tom Keane was to meet eight opponents on its southern trip. Seniors form the nucleus of the squad. They are Roger Bentley, Larry Savage, Hank Marcotte, and Bob Argosy, plus junior Dave Lasher - all of whom saw action last year. Steve Atwater and Pete Parker, also

seniors, are newcomers to the team, as is Kent Graham, a talented sophomore. Coach Keane is reasonably optimistic about the team, although he points again to the lack of any really outstanding golfers on the squad.

The Dartmouth crews have been hard at work on the-Connecticut for the past six weeks and heavyweight Coach Pete Gardner hopes the Big Green can do well against increasingly tough competition. During spring vacation the varsity trained at Kent School in Connecticut and the freshmen at M.I.T. in Cambridge. Five seniors who have been rowing together since sophomore year provide strength for the varsity heavyweight boat. They are Captain and stroke Barry Gibson, Pete Holland, Jim Graham, Roy Eisenhardt and Brooks Wrightman. Other first-boat prospects include Reed Ambler, Joe Torok, Eric Foster, and coxswain Mike Hinter - all juniors - and sophomore Dave Gundy. The 150-pound crews, coached by Hartwell Perry '55, may well do better than the heavyweights as they have virtually the same men as last year and have been steadily improving.

Another banner season seems in store for the Dartmouth rugby teams. During spring vacation the varsity again journeyed to the West Coast to play the University of California and St. Mary's College and to participate in the Northern California rugby tournament. On April 10 the Dartmouth ruggers play an Oxford-Cambridge rugby team in Michie Stadium at West Point. This game will be telecast by CBS-TV as one of the Sports Spectacular programs. Then the Indians move into their formal spring schedule in defense of the Eastern Championship. The varsity tennis team, coached by Red Hoehn and captained by Bill Mc-Lung, had five southern matches carded during spring vacation. It should have a fine season, although it will miss some of the standout players of last year such as Dick Hoehn.
