Now that you are sitting in your easy chair trying to regroup your forces and recuperating after the March 15th raid on your bank account you are probably wondering how to repair the damage to Junior's piggy bank that possibly was smashed in order to obtain the last red cent. So kick off your shoes, light up your pipe, and read what we have come forth with for this issue.
Bud Kast breaks into print again with the announcement that he has been elected the new president of the Millburn Township Little League. As you all know Bud is headmaster of the Short Hills Country Day School, and in addition is the present secretary of the Millburn Community Council, a member of the Dartmouth College interviewing commission and serves on the Board of Trustees of St, David's School, New York.
Word has come that Doug Perry has been formally discharged from the Navy and is reopening his practice of pediatrics in Bristol, Conn. Doug was recalled to active duty a year ago October and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Key West, Fla. Doug and his family are now living at 155 Louisiana Ave., Bristol, Conn.
Bob Varney, who resides in Littleton, N. H., has recently been appointed to the staff of the Greater Vermont Association. He will combine the duties of the field representative for GVA with promotion work and will aid in building GVA's membership, the funds from which are used for the national advertising and development programs. Formerly Bob was assistant general manager and assistant to the president of the Mount Washington Railway Company and served as an instructor in public relations and economics at the Boston University School of Public Relations and Communications.
Word comes that Winger Munn has been designated assistant director of field personnel in charge of brokerage throughout the United States by the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company. In this new position Winger will head a new division responsible for the development and promotion of brokerage business through sales promotion and agency activity in key areas.
Seeing this news come in about the Winger reminds me of the night he was initiated into the Dragon Society. For those that never heard or have forgotten this instance a little refresher might be in order. It seems that the Winger had been running track most of the afternoon on the day of the initiation and late in the evening after numerous beers the old legs couldn't take it any longer and navigation became quite difficult. After finally depositing the limp form in the bed (I was rooming with Winger at the time) and proceeding to make him comfortable for the evening's rest, it was discovered that the Winger still had his long sweat pants on and this was his excuse for folding up so early. Winger, old boy, how is your capacity these days?
Word comes that Lee Romanow, who is now practicing law in Natick, Mass., is seeking election to the town's planning board. Lee attended Harvard Law School after graduation. Any members of the Class in this vicinity should get behind Lee and help him in his campaign.
An interesting news item was received in the form of a picture which shows Herb Gordon, president of the North Adams Rotary Club, lighting a cigar for Frank E. Hall, a street cleaner, who was honored by the club at a recent luncheon. Hall was honored as one of the "unsung heroes of American life" - how true this is.
Before getting into the other news I would appreciate some assistance from the class members in scattered sections throughout the country in the form of volunteers, to be set up as regional reporters, so that they could channel news items to me. It is especially desired to have them in the big cities where there is a concentration of classmates. Once we have obtained the volunteers we will try to assemble a geographical breakdown for the Class, so that the regional reporters can help to prod news from the class members as well as pick up gossip running around. Who will volunteer! I sincerely feel that by establishing such a procedure we can present a more informative and enlightened column. For some of you who have complained in the past about not seeing any news items concerning your close friends in the column, here is a chance to be of help.
A short time ago I received a very interesting letter from Fritz Geller which goes as follows:
Johnny Hyde sent me this letter from HowieThomas a few weeks ago and I have held it perhaps longer than is healthy, if news is not to become stale. Howie seems to get around; I'm sure that a number of the fellows in the Class would be interested in some of the sections of his letter. Howie's address is: H. C. Thomas, Vice Consul, U.S. Information Service, Lille (Nord), - As far as further news is concerned it is interesting to note that John Hyde is now chairman of the Board of the Sydney-Livingston Land Co. I doubt if J. L. would write this about himself, so I'll pass this along for what it's worth.
At long last a second '43er has shown up at the Dartmouth Club here in Buffalo. I ran into GeneMcCarthy at the Christmas luncheon. He apparently is happy peddling Ediphones. I hope I've got the right outfit. That must be an all-right job - selling something that you can talk to and won't talk back unless you push the button.
As for myself I'm with the Instrument Div. of American Optical Co. At present I'm attempting to coordinate our Division's responsibilities for the Todd-A.O. movie process. Wish I were at liberty to tell you about it, but suffice it to say that it is a so-called 3D process. We of course think we have something and hope that it is successful. Anyway it's damn interesting work and you don't have much chance to collect much moss. Don't have any more news of the boys, but as it comes in I will pass it along.
With reference to the letter from HowieThompson that Fritz mentions, I found it both amusing and interesting. However, due to a lack of space it will be impossible to publish the letter for this issue but it will be in the next one.
That about winds up the column for this issue, but please let's hear from some hearty souls who will volunteer for the regional reporters. News is always welcomed, so please drop me a line concerning yourself or anyone else in the Class.
