Coach Tom Dent found cold weather and strong opposition when he took his lacrosse team southward during the Spring vacation. The Indian stickmen won two (20-0 over Adelphi and 12-4 over North Carolina), while losing six games (7-6 Hofstra, 8-5 Princeton, 11-9 Duke, 8-5 Washington and Lee, 20-7 Maryland, and 9-5 Rutgers).
Generally speaking the Big Green lacrosse team has a good attack, a very strong midfield section, but a poor defense and questionable goal tending. Nine lettermen are on the squad including Captain Dick Gates and Ray Lenhard on attack; midfielders Jon Anderson, John Batchelder, Bob Cleveland and Bill White: with Stearns Martin the only letter-winning defenseman, and John Wetzel at goal.
Ron Campion, Paul Tiemer and Pete Gulick are leading attack candidates, while midfield help can be expected from junior Bob Spencer and sophomores Tom Conlon, Link Spaulding and Jim Hill. On defense, Stan Klapper, Frank Sims, Wally Pugh and Chuck Hunter are all rated as good candidates, but none has sufficient experience to add much strength to this department.
With Yale, R.P.I., Syracuse and Harvard all fielding stronger teams this year, Coach Dent feels the Indians will have their work cut out for them. "Our attack and midfield are in good shape," he admits "but unless we can develop some players on defense, I don't think we can expect to win many games this spring. Defense and goal are very important in lacrosse and we need improvement there."
