Probably the best appraisal of the Big Green track team, coached by Ellie Noyes, may be gathered from its most recent showing in the outdoor Heptagonals, held this year at Harvard.

The meet was won by Yale with 61 2/3 points. The Elis were led by Stewart Thompson, a 20-year-old junior, who became the first triple-event winner in Hep history by capturing the shotput, the discus throw and the hammer throw. His toss of 180'4" set a new record in the hammer throw.

Dartmouth finished in ninth place with 6 2/21 points, just ahead of Brown which was shut out. Scoring for the Indians was Dick Fairley, who was in a seven-way tie for fourth place in the high jump (six feet); Bill Buchanan who was in a six-way tie for first place in the pole vault (12'6"), and John Harlor whose leap of 22'4½" won him undisputed third place in the broad jump. (Harlor won the broad jump at the indoor Heptagonals.)

Previous to the Heptagonals, the Indians had taken second place in a triangular meet with Boston University and Holy Cross, had defeated Brown 83-56 and placed fairly well in the New England Relays.

Actually, the New England Relays provided the first meet of the season for Dartmouth. A new meet, the New England Relays made their debut at the Harvard Stadium and Yale walked off with most of the honors. The Dartmouth team of Dud Heath, Ed Storrs, Dick Hogarty and Walt Clarkson placed second to Harvard in the distance medley, while the Indian runners placed third in the 880-yard relay. Dartmouth's Dick Fairley tied for third place in the high jump; John Harlor, off form, took fifth in the broad jump; and Bill Buchanan garnered fourth in the pole vault.

Weakness in the sprints and middle-distance events cost Dartmouth first place in a triangular meet with Boston University and Holy Cross, although the fact that Walt Clarkson, out ahead in the 120 low hurdles, stumbled and fell just short of the tape did not help matters. Final scores showed B.U. with 71 points to 59 for Dartmouth and 43 for Holy Cross.

Clarkson and Hogarty took second and third in the mile for Dartmouth, while Sandy Heath, trailing by ten yards, anchored the Dartmouth relay team to first place in that event. Harlor won the broad jump and Chapman the high hurdles, while Fairley took the high jump for Dartmouth. Buchanan took the pole vault for the Indians, but the weight events and javelin throw were costly for Dartmouth.

ONE OF THE STRONGEST GOLF TEAMS in Dartmouth's athletic history poses on the Hanover course with Coach Tommy Keane. Left to right: Tom Sayles, Don Purple, Alan Anderson, Don Kurth, Clark Weymouth, Dick Drake, Fred Oman, Captain Bill Rex, and Coach Keane.
