Despite an early 8-1 win over M.I.T. and a 5-2 victory over Northeastern, it looks as though it's going to be a long winter for Coach Eddie Jeremiah and his hockey stalwarts. The starting lineup so far has Captain Dana "Red" Hennigar at center, Chet Gale at right wing and Dave Tonneson at left wing, sophomore Dan Goggin and George Snelson on defense, and Gordie Russell at goal. All except Goggin are lettermen. Dartmouth's second line is centered by Ab Oakes, with last year's frosh captain Charlie Sprott at left wing and Steve Winslow at right wing. Playing on the third line are Spud Mansur at center and sophomores Reyn Guyer and Sam Bartlett on the wings. Bob Marchant, who returned from war service, and sophomore Charles Sellman are the defensive reserves, with Sellman currently rated ahead of Snelson on the basis of the early games.
In the two games to date the Indians have shown a great deal of hustle and spirit, although it is all too apparent that they lack any real power attack and that the defense is spotty. Speed is also a problem. The M.I.T. team was weak and the Big Green had little trouble in scoring eight goals. Against Northeastern, however, the story was different. The Huskies played a strong game and led by a 2-1 score going into the third period, but Dartmouth put on a last-period splurge to go out ahead 5-2 for their second win in a row.
The Indians meet tougher opposition in Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and then lay off during the Christmas holidays before moving into Pentagonal League play in January. Coach Eddie Jeremiah plans to bring his squad back to Hanover immediately after New Year's for three full days of workouts before College reopens.
There is no doubt that this Dartmouth team, thanks to artificial ice, will be well drilled and have plenty of practice. However, no amount of practice or game experience can ever fully compensate for lack of material and talent, and again this year it seems that the Indians will be relegated to a secondary position in the league.
