Your secretary in late summer was a weekend guest of Dr. Edwin H. Allen '85 of Beacon Hill, Boston, at his estate in Whitinsville, Mass., which the 91-year-old Dartmouth graduate occupies each year from early spring until well into autumn. This beautiful estate of about two hundred acres formerly belonged to the Whitin family - accountable for the name by which this locality is known, of which Dr. Allen's late wife was a member. Their son and only child, Nathaniel Draper Whitin Allen, a Harvard graduate and unmarried, resides with his father. For many years he has been associated with the First National Bank of Boston, in which he now holds the position of Assistant Vice President.

Subscriptions to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for the academic year of 1955-56 include all living members of our Class (four graduates and one non-graduate) and eight members of our Class Family Group.

Bequest Chairmen met in Hanover September 16 and 17 as guests of the College for the fifth annual fall meeting of the Bequest and Estate Planning Program. Thirty-three classes (1886 to 1929 inclusive) were represented at the meeting, your secretary representing the Class of 1889. A reception for class representatives, wives and alternates was held on the Hanover Inn lawn late afternoon the first day, followed by a dinner in the main dining room of the Inn. That evening in Sanborn House Library President John Sloan Dickey addressed these guests of the College, in which he reviewed and evaluated the policies of the last few years in relation to the problems and purpose of the College as it looks forward to its bicentennial in 1969. The next morning the group again met in Sanborn House Library for a general business meeting, at which Ellsworth Buck '14, chairman of the Alumni Council committee on Bequests and Estate Planning, presided. George H. Colton '35, executive secretary, submitted his report as secretary, following which a group discussion was held, with Prof. Nathaniel G. Burleigh '11 as moderator, and a panel consisting of Herbert A. Wolff, 10, Ford H. Whelden '25 and Charles F. Bruder '28. The fifth fall meeting closed with a luncheon at the Outing Club House that noon, at which J. Ross Gamble, Director of Development, spoke concerning the creation of the new Trustees' committee on Development as a central policy body for Dartmouth fund-raising, and the relationship of the Bequest Program to the plans of the bicentennial of the College in 1969.

Mrs. Nathaniel K. No-yes of Plymouth, Mass., in renewing her subscription to the ALUMS: MAGAZINE for 1955-56, expresses her appreciation of being a member of our Class Family Group, and writes, "I surely look forward to receiving the MAGAZINE.

Your secretary on his recent visit to Hanover indulged in one of his favorite pastimes while there - a walk through the College Park. The principal places visited, after taking a good look at the "Old Row" of College dormitories - Wentworth, Old Dartmouth, Thornton and Reed, in the latter of which he roomed junior and senior years, were the stone tower, now known as Bartlett Tower, ten feet of which members of his Class built; then the nearby stump of the Old Pine, under whose spreading branches his Class held its Class Day Exercises, ending with smoking the pipe of peace and each member dashing his clay pipe against the trunk of the tree. Moving down the hill '89's Class Tree was visited - a maple tree planted by members of his Class 66 years ago last June, now grown to be one of the tallest and most beautiful maple trees in the College Park — a sight of indescribable beauty when ablaze with its autumnal foliage. For those interested, '89's Class Tree is reached by a narrow path leading from behind Fayerweather dormitory along past the front of Ripley, Woodward and Smith Halls, where it enters College Park. 89's Class Tree is at right a few steps away within College Park, marked at its base with a granite stone bearing the figures '89. A visit to this spot always arouses memories that are dearly cherished.
