As this copy goes to press, we are enjoying a spell of those balmy Indian Summer days on the Hanover plain and the glorious colors of a few days ago have quieted down to more restful tans and yellows, though the trees are not yet stripped down for real winter weather as they will be long before this appears in print.
The summer and fall mails have brought us news of many alumni including several of our most recent 1955 models. Of these, quite a few are in the armed services either direct from ROTC or by draft or enlistment. After spending the summer on a construction job of the J. E. Serrine Company, Lefty Terrill CE'55 has reported to Officers' Candidate School for the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps at Newport, R. I. Also at Newport is Arthur Ranch TT'55.
Ace Taylor EE'55, a product of Dartmouth's Air Force ROTC, has been assigned as an instructor in the Nuclear Branch of the Department of Special Weapons for the 3415th Technical Training Wing at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. He contributes the following item under the heading of "Security": "Military discipline in the Air Force is less strict than the other service branches, but Security is firmly controlled. In fact, a few days before I received my clearance I submitted a lesson plan having used a non-classified textbook for reference. The plan was declared SECRET and I could not have it returned to me for correction until my clearance arrived. That is certainly the height of Security." Can't you top that one yet, Ace?
Bonneville CE'55 and Dana Low CE'55, both Ensigns USN out of the Navy ROTC program here, entered on active duty at Norfolk. Bill was assigned to the USS Stribling, while Dana was flown to Naples, Italy, where he joined the USS Hawkins.
Steve Butterfield '33, who is now City Traffic Engineer in Philadelphia, is the author of an article "The Philadelphia Story" which appeared in the June issue of Highway Highlights.
Nate Parker TT'53 writes from 2602 Pittsfield Boulevard, Ann Arbor, Mich., where he is a student in the law school, with news which seems to be best told in his own words: "On August 27 I married Miss Janice Cleary in Marblehead. Jan is a member of my class in law school and a graduate of Connecticut College for Women. While I am still very dubious about entering the legal profession, I can say that I am glad I came to law school! ChuckQueenan (TT'53) was one of my ushers, but he was the only Thayer student present."
We were honored to receive an announcement of the ordination of the Reverend Charles Terence Quinn '47 on June 9 and an invitation to his First Solemn Mass at the Church of Saint Joseph in Long Island City, New York, on June 12.
Bob Elkins '40 has been having a busy time of it as Field Engineer for the Adams and Ruxton Construction Company in Springfield, Mass. Bob has three children, Susanne, six, Johnny, four, and Elizabeth, one. Bob speaks tantalizingly of a trip his mother and father, Ed Elkins '15, took to Kenya Colony last winter, but I have been unable to get any details from either father or son.
A letter last summer from Bob Fiertz ME'52 described his engineering work as a PFC at Rossford Ordnance Depot in Toledo, Ohio. More recently, a postcard has reached Thayer School from Bob in Europe where he has been spending a six-week leave.
Ronald Rose ME'53 wrote, in anticipation of the event, that he was to be married to Miss Joann Staples of Verona, Pa., on Saturday, September 6. We had hoped to see the Roses on their wedding trip, but unfortunately we must have been called out when they called. Ron is with the Atomic Power Division of the Westinghouse Company in Pittsburgh. He writes, "I have the dubious distinction of being the only mechanical engineer in our Physics Department. Our work is primarily transient analysis, stability, and control of nuclear power plants. There is a surprising amount of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow analysis in this business of powerplant analysts, and it is extremely interesting work."
I was sorry to hear from John Sewall "43 that he has been a patient at the Warm Springs Foundation in Georgia since early last March, having been hit by poliomyelitis a year ago last summer. John is looking forward to returning to NACA in Hampton, Va., where, he is an aeronautical research scientist. His permanent address is 218 Pine Grove Road, Warwick, Va.
A letter, several months old now, from JoeGilchrist CE'51 brought the exciting news of the arrival on June 18 of his first son William Hunter Gilchrist to join Joe and Caroline's fine family of three daughters, Kit, Jane, and Judy. Joe is still enthusiastic about his work with the Bechtel Company in Los Angeles and has recently become registered as a professional civil engineer in California.
Robert M. Dewey '22, who took his engineering degree at Thayer School in 1923, recently has been made Manager of the Fire Special Risks Division in the Business Extension Department of the Kemper Insurance Companies, Chicago. He has his headquarters in the home office in Chicago.
