During our student days at Dartmouth there were in the Academic Department five of the so-called Greek-Letter Secret Societies, one of which was a strictly local Society. All others were fashioned under the chapter system, as is Phi Beta Kappa. These Societies were Psi Upsilon (established in 1841); Alpha Delta Phi (1847); Delta Kappa Epsilon (1853); Theta Delta Chi (1869); Phi Delta Theta (1884) and Kappa Kappa Kappa (1842), a local Society; also two so-called Greek-Letter Secret Societies in the Chandler Scientific Department: Phi Zeta Mu (1857); and Sigma Delta (1858). Each Society had its special handclasp, or grip, - strictly guarded as a secret, and the Greek words for which the Greek letters of each Society stood for were not made public.
