We're taking a little northward detour from finishing up the Gold Coast to profile the Choates this month. Rick's done the heavy lifting-I'm just stringing the data points together. Toni CookMonsey reports from Charlotte, Vt., that she has two kids, 21/2 and 6 months. Prior to taking time off for the kids, she worked as a research psychologist. Monika safford spoke longingly of her three terms in the "cinderblocks." She is now an academic internist at N.J. Medical School pursuing health services research in diabetes. She has two kids, ages 8 and 6.I can only imagine she meant it in a complimentary way when she wrote, "The best treat was walking up between Phi Delt and Kappa Sig and smelling that special perfume Saturday and Sunday mornings." Monika mentioned that AndreaPloss O'Neill recently brought her third son into the world and is living outside Boston in an "enviable house." Betsy Ham has 9-year old twin girls and is married to Warren Whitney. They live, Monika points out, in Bowdoinham, Maine.
The last time I saw Jane Brass Barth, it was touring shrimp hatcheries she had developed in Ko Samut, Thailand. From there, as best I can recall, she went to do aquaculture work in Haiti, followed by graduate studies at Florida State. She currently works for a non-profit that helps rural Oregon communities transition from natural resource-based economies. She lives in Corvallis with her husband, Jack, a professor of oceanography at Oregon State. She recently got together with, among others, fellow Bissellite AbbyKurr Eckert, who has a son and daughter and works in the shipping industry. Jane reports that Debbie Diiorio has her own law firm in San Diego.
Fred Konopka is a quantitative equity analyst for MDT Advisors in Cambridge. He commented that had heard that the "closet singles" in the Choates are smaller that the legal minimum for a New Hampshire prison cell. Peter "Shettie"Frechette reports pain in accessing his memories of the Choates because they are filed adjacent to the vivid image of Bucky "Why Isn't He in Cooperstown?" Dent hitting the ball out of Fenway Park in the 1978 American League East playoff. Shettie is the coordinating producer of "Front Row," "Bruins Digest," "Red Sox Digest" and "Fan Attic" for the New England Sports Network. He's been married ten years and has a 3-year-old daughter. Jason Klein recounted '78-'79 as the year of Bruce Springsteen in Brown Hall. He reminisces about Grant Burkhart's pained incantation: "I can't believe I signed up for Chinese!" Will Polik was more positive about his Choate experience; he listed easy access to cross-country skiing on Occom Pond and the golf course as overlooked virtues. Will has a Ph.D. in chemistry from UC Berkeley. He's a professor of physical chemistry at Hope College in Michigan. He has created a web-based discussion board product called "Discus" (www.discusware. com) that has 18,000 members. He has two kids, 8 and 5.
Tim Jarvis hails from Hong Kong, where he works with Chase Manhattan Bank. He should be back at the mother ship in New York by the time you've tackled the mailman to get to this column. He will be lead product manager for Chase's global custody products. Jim Steiner is a partner at Cades Schutte Fleming & Wright, "one of Hawaii's largest law firms, and certainly its best." And, yes, he does surf. He has been married 17 years with kids aged 14, 11 and 8. He got his law degree at Hastings.
In an abbreviated call with Tom Daniels, in whose cabinet I proudly serve, I learned he works late on the Wednesdays before Thanksgiving and that he runs the emerging telecom and internet investment banking group at Chase Securities. He has kids ages 10 and 7. His wife is an attorney and he lives in a nice part of New Jersey. (If you don't recall, Tom is president of the class of '82.) Cheers.
