It is little to say that Nets Barker of the Mayo Clinic belongs to twelve medical societies; many doctors and surgeons do. But Nels may well have set an all-time 1921 record for the number of his published writings: 180 articles. In this year so far he has four: "Surgical Treatment for Arterial Disease," "Peripheral Vascular Diseases," "Primary Arteritis of the Aortic Arch," and "Anticoagulant Therapy."
Just think of how different doctors are! DocFleming is an authority on primary carcinoma of the vermiform appendix. Then there is Pud Walker, in print with "Leakage of Spinal Fluid during Thoracoplasty with Subsequent Formation of Subarachnoid Fistula." BenTenney has written many articles on the care of women before, during, and after pregnancy and on women's diseases. Could doctors understand Henry Palmer writing on the control of isomer formation and on partial pressures of aqueous hydrogen chloride solutions?
Just think too how different surgeons are from other research men! Dave Trainer has published numerous articles on geological subjects; Paul Smith, on mathematical, with special attention to the fields of topology and group theory. Ralph Steiner has appeared many times as author of articles on photography. Pete Bailey has written reports for the Minnesota Power and Light Co. Russ Bailey and Chick Stiles produced Dartmouth 1921 for our Thirtieth Reunion, and Hal Braman is editor of The Smoker. Seth Densmore has contributed articles for the Journal of Accountancy; and Bob Elsasser, to trade association magazines. "A Brief Sketch of Romantic Lumbering in Our Country" was written by Bill Embree. Bill Fowler has published three volumes of poetry. In ModernLanguage Notes is George Frost's learned article "That Precious Corpus Madrian." Charlie Gilson contributes to The LivingChurch. In a somewhat different vein OrtHicks presented once to the Secretary of Defense his "Report of the Film Survey Committee." Sandy Sanders has investigated "Stratigraphic Type Oil Fields and Proposed New Classification of Reservoir Traps." Erling Hunt has so many varieties of educational articles that they fill much space in Education Index. The name of Harland Manchester, expert on scientific and technological developments, is to be found in more than forty different magazines. Gordon Merriam has written on "The Regional Geography of Asia Minor" in Economic Geography. One of the better columnists of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE is Reg Miner, much missed at this particular moment.
How some 1921 men do move around in the business world! Take Leigh Tracy, for example. Now manager of sales, National Accounts Division with the Globe-Wernicke Co., New York, he has been in silk, building and contracting, steel products of all types, propane gas and gas appliances as assistant manager, treasurer, special sales representative, district and divisional and general manager, and vice president.
And yet others, like Joe Vance of Detroit, have stayed put. Joe has been with Beaumont, Smith and Harris, his law firm, since his graduation from Harvard Law School 32 years ago, except when he was legal counsel to the Surgeon General's Office in Washington and later chief legal counsel for A. G. O. in St. Louis during the war. Joe, by the way, is now president of the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club.
Do you like to travel? Then hear this. Just for pleasure and education, aside from business, government, and the armed services, IkeChester, president of the Globe American Corporation, who lives in Kokomo, Ind., has visited 75 foreign countries in the last twenty years, some of them several times. Thus Ike becomes a leading candidate for president of the 1921 International Travellers Club, opposed by such cosmos-catapults as John Sullivan, Ort Hicks, Roland Batchelder, CoreyFord, and Ellis Briggs.
During the Harvard-Dartmouth weekend two members of 1921 and their wives were a trifle shocked to learn that sober Don Sawyer, conservative stockbroker and vestryman at Emmanuel Church, confessed under direct questioning that during a European trip he had become an unashamed balletomane. Even in staid and old Boston he indulges his passion on occasion. But you know Boston. Don hopes to return to Europe next year.
A pleasant moment among many of that weekend came when Bob Loeb looking like a man of distinction drove his low-hung British sports car, a Jaguar no less, along Main Street, Hanover. Perched beside him on the seat was Jeff Lawrence, waving with particular gaiety at sundry folk on foot. Bob intensified that man-of-distinction impression at the football game with a particularly smart-looking leather cap and at the class meeting with a gay vest. On both occasions Bob smoked a pipe gently and philosophically, but Beagle's forward passes induced him to jerk it abruptly from his mouth.
Kent and Marjorie McKinley of Sarasota, Fla., are still getting congratulations from prominent persons on their baby's first birthday, October 6. Baby has been growing fast and putting on weight since her birth. Though so young, she is known throughout the state for her precocious articulateness. "Baby" is, of course, The News, the McKinley newspaper. On her birthday Kent proudly celebrated it with a 128-page edition of which a considerable portion was devoted to advertising, extolling Sarasota as "the best place to live in the whole USA." Vying in plumpness with The New York Sunday Times, it is chock-full of pictures, among the best of which are those showing Kent and Marjorie putting baby to bed. Others are not without particular appeal: bathing beauties; business developments and conventions; golf links; Arabian-Nights hotels; a thousand and one amusements, including square dancing, gardening, archery, and dog racing; and the Beaux Arts Ball where the leading attractions are a Chinese mandarin and his slant-eyed wife, a cave couple dressed only in leopard skins, and Queen Victoria, responsible for an age so puritanical and strict that Beaux Arts Balls are an inevitable and moral development.
