First it was the belated but Terrific 5th then the happy reunion moriient for 117 classmates accompanied by what was stated by ex-Secretary Moody to be "a delicious assortment of wives!" Four years later there followed the Gigantic 10th — which marked the commencement of 1940's second decade, with some 280 classmates present. Next June 15-17, the occasion of our 15th, this time belated by reason of the staggered reunion schedule, will bring with it a flavor of maturing years. For many in the class the path of family and business life has firmed. The search for subsistence has given way to the development of career satisfactions, and the maturing role is one of constructive influence in the economic, social and political community. Truly, with the 15th, the self-interest of individual effort should give way to an aura of well being and renewed interest in the achievement of the group.

For Dartmouth College and the future of the program for which the College stands, this group awareness will become the more important as we progress from our 15th to our 25th. That's why last June's results of the Alumni Fund, with 1940's front-running group effort in its Green Derby race, was the more significant. This column is foreshortened to permit publication of contributors names as testimony to the fine support which Head Class Agent Hugh Schwarz and his active assistant agents obtained from you.

Reviewing the news, we note that BobWetzler of Cohasset, Mass., has been promoted to the position of comptroller of the Craftsman Insurance Company of Boston, underwriters of individual and health insurance. Bob was formerly a partner in a local management consultant firm and, before that, an accountant with Ernst & Ernst, in Boston.

In Darien, Conn., which recently survived torrential floods about which you may have read, Jack Halpern, from nearby Riverside, gave the local camera club enthusiasts an informal talk on the finer points of film exposure. Jack, whom the newspaper account describes as a "semi-professional photographer," makes his real professional career in the field of video advertising, being a member of the TV division of the Ervin Wasey advertising agency. We saw Jack and his pretty wife Cecilia a couple of years ago at a post-Yale game celebration in Darien. At that time he was able to exhibit the same prowess at the piano that he once displayed in occasional interludes in the front room of Freshman Commons.

And, speaking of the Yale game, Joyce and I did attend this year's somewhat one-sided and ill-fated result for the Big Green a couple of weeks ago. Trouble was that the Green wasn't big nor fast enough. With the assistance of our personal spotters, the deSieyes and the Ed Millers, we managed to see sufficiently well through the haze to pick out a number of regular attendants from the ranks of '40. These included the Fred Porters, JohnCrandells, Bill Hutchinsons, Bob Gensels, KenSteeles, Dick Bowmans and Ben Bacons, as well as Bill Bumsted, George Johnson, JohnBurnap, Dick Warners and a few others I probably missed. Ken Steele is now head of the surgical service at the new VA hospital in West Haven. There wasn't enough time to more than say a quick hello to those of the aforementioned whom we got close to, so we don't have any recent gossip on any others than Ken.

Earlier in the month, in the course of a brief stay in Washington, I managed to catch up with John English. Wife, Bitsy, and the kids were off to the Pennsylvania hills for the weekend, leaving John to attend to his insurance business untill he could join them later. He has recently changed to a new agency, with the Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., where he finds things more to his liking. There was no time to make contact with the rest of the Washington clan, of which Charlie Horan, 800 Hayden, Bill Shelton and Robin Hartmann are a few. Maybe next time we'll do better. Meantime, have a happy Christmas season, and please accept the hopes of your correspondent that you and yours have a bountiful New Year in 1956 - the year of Forty's Fifteenth!
