There is a huge quantity of news this month but the editor has requested we keep notes shorter in order to print the list of Alumni Fund contributors - a list that is longer this year than ever before. Therefore, reports on the Yale and Columbia weekends will have to wait until the January MAGAZINE.
Once again I must start the class notes by reporting the death of one of our beloved classmates. Larry Andrew died on October 5, in Portland, Maine. The following letter was received from his roommate, George Baine.
"I have just returned from Portland, Me., where I represented the class as a pall bearer at the funeral of Laurence C. Andrew, known to us all as Andy. Andy was a vigorous and successful salesman for the L. C. Andrew Lumber Company, owned by his father. He will be missed tremendously by those who knew him well as a quiet, energetic and hard worker. He had contracted the incurable Hodgkins disease, knew of his condition for a year and was prepared for the ultimate. He leaves his wife Ginnie, two daughters and a son."
Those of you who have heard of Expedition Deepfreeze will be interested to know that Commander Dave Nult helped form plans for that project. Incidentally, Dave participated in the Second Antarctic Development Project in 1947-48.
My agents in Hanover have sent me the following list of '415 who have registered at the Hanover Inn during the past several months: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson, Dr. and Mrs. Bob Rainie, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Blanchard, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cluthe, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Israel, Mr. and Mrs. Don Knight and Robert Barr. I'm sure there were many others in Hanover for the Lafayette and Harvard games.
Incidentally, I am for more televised victories such as we saw from Hanover when John Harvard was in town. In addition to the football, it was great publicity for the College as the TV cameras panned across the campus and the surrounding hillsides and the announcer spoke about the invigorating air, the gorgeous fall colors, Baker Library and the wonderful place Dartmouth would be for a boy to study. It was truly heart-warming.
Hall Buzzell, who always was a whiz at math, is now an assistant professor of mathematics at Norwich University. For the previous nine years he was a mathematics instructor at the University of Massachusetts. Another name in college teaching circles is Dr.Win Shorey who has gone to the University of Miami in Florida as Associate Professor of Medicine and a member of the full-time teaching staff. He will also have charge of the gastrointestinal division of medicine of which he is a specialist. Incidentally, Win's wife, the former Jeannette S. McConnell of Richmond, Va., is also an M.D. They met when both were on the staff of the University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Bob Frothingham has been appointed to the position of assistant to the president of Silver Creek Precision Corporation. Before joining Silver Creek last March, Bob served as an aide to the technical director of the General Motors Overseas Operation. To give you an idea of coincidences that happen among '415 — I had a report that Grant Hesser, in the contracting business in Cincinnati, had to go to Pittsburgh in connection with investigating a construction job. The man he had to contact turned out to be Frank Andrews.
Attending the '40-'41-'42 Class Dinner at the New York Club on October 19 were BobTaft, Jack McMillin, George Middendorf,Marston Gibbs, Red O'Connor and yours truly. Be back next month. Remember to get ready for the Big Fifteenth Reunion next spring.
