Luncheon every Wednesday noon, Danny'sRestaurant, 516 Grand St.

The Dartmouth Club of Western Pennsylvania had a most agreeable and satisfying Father and Son Luncheon in the ballroom of the Hotel Sheraton on December 29. It was agreeable because the speakers were all interesting in both their subject matter and their presentation, and it was satisfying because the turnout of 85 alumni, fathers, sons, and guests made the effort behind such a meeting seem very worthwhile.

Our president, Fred Garfield '46, acted as master of ceremonies at the luncheon. As has been the practice in past years, he called on several of the undergraduates to give short talks on various aspects of the college scene. Tom Hamilton '55 spoke about last year's football team and the prospects for the next few seasons, which he seemed to think were very bright indeed. Tom Waddell '55 gave a very excellent talk on the background and issues in the recent controversy over the admissibility of the recognition of Red China as a proper subject for debate by the Service Academies. Tom is the president of the Dartmouth Forensic Union and he recently gave Dartmouth's viewpoint on this controversy on Ed Murrow's nationally televised show. One of our Western Pennsylvania boys, Rus Leslie, was elected president of the freshman class, and he was on hand to give a fine report of '58's activities.

The principal speaker for the day was LouisBenezet, the president of Allegheny College and a distinguished member of the Dartmouth Class of 1936. Blair Rainey, one of Louis' classmates, introduced him. Louis gave a wonderfully interesting talk, full of witticisms and sage comments, about Dartmouth, Allegheny, and the place, problems, and advantages of a liberal arts education in America today.
