The annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston was held at the Hotel Statler on February 16 and in the minds of many it was high on the Hooper Rating. Not only was the chicken less akin to pure latex, but the speakers were excellent. It was remarked that few undergraduates of our college generation could do as good a job as Captain-Elect McKenna of the football team and the show was almost stolen by Graduate Student Buxton from Cambridge, England. The Class of 1914 was represented by Austin, Batchelder, Flanders, Grant, Gregg,Lawrence, Nichols, Stiles, and your secretary. It was grand to welcome Vogie Stiles to this area and equally pleasant to extract Grant and Nichols from their North-of-Boston hideouts. We had a good time. You'd have liked it - better try it some time.
Some time ago you will recall the worried look carried by Charlie Batch,.the Watchdog of the 1914 Treasury, account of having projected the expense of buying Memorial Books for the Library. Apparently he worked out that he was going to outlive all of us and would get to the point where he would be buying books for all of us! However, he has asked me to report that the actuarial statistics look better as the result of those donors, listed below, to the 1914 Baker Memorial Library Book Fund; Applin, Austin, Aborn, Mrs. Borden, E. Buck, Chas. Batchelder, Burnham, Buckley, Conners, Curtis, Crandall, C. M., Fred Davidson, DeWitt, Elkins, Dean Emerson, Floyd, Grant, Hinman, Humphries, Holway, Jack Harris, Ralph Jenkins, Scott Jones, Ernie Kimball, Kingsley, Kingsford, Bino Knight, Larmon, Little, LeCount, Loveland, Main, MacKinnon, Maddalena, Naramore, Newmark, Pritchard, Perkins, Stiles, Sleeper, Stillman, Sisson, Spore, Tilton, Trott, Voorhees, Von Lenz, Van Riper, Wescott. Thanks to all.
Jess Stillman writes that Vice President BillHands arranged a dinner at the Dartmouth Club in New York at which the following were present: Barlow, Kingsley, Larmon, LeCount, Stillman, and Wheelock. He (Jess) is supervisor, Physical and Analytical Division, Chemical Division, E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co. His work is principally in the research field.
Ralph Phelps, who gives us a new address at P. O. Box 588, Annapolis, Md., is the executive director, American Yachtsmen's Association. This may be old news but it's the first time he's admitted it to us. Sounds like a transformation of avocation into vocation. Nice work if you can get it!
John Swigert Jr. is a fruit and produce broker and says he spends most of his time out in the producing areas, so is dilatory in reading his mail - hence the delay in returning his questionnaire. His proper address is 2514 Scottwood Ave., Toledo, Ohio.
Ham Barnes reports he is back on the job after a forced vacation of some six months. Also reports his son Henry '50 is married and living nearby. Those of you who indulge in the "Roaring Game" (George Boggs note this) will be interested to learn that Em Barrett was the skip of a winning rink for the Country Club in the opening round of the 36th Annual Howard Stockton Memorial Bonspiel held at The Country Club (Brookline, Mass.) February 25. Unfortunately his rink was eliminated in the semi-finals by the Rideau Curling Club of Ottawa. The Chicago Curling Club were the ultimate winners.
Skidmore College held "Happy Pappy Weekend" March 4. Among the Happy Pappys present was Loring Nichols, whose daughter Kinky, a sophomore at Skidmore, will be remembered by those attending SnoBird reunions in the past.
