With winter upon us, why not make the weeks ahead a good time for all of us who have special interests in trees and flowers to exchange notes on what we are doing indoors or planning to do outdoors when spring comes?
To start off with, Myron Files Northwood Ridge, N.H., has just written of having green tomatoes growing in his sunny kitchen window from little plants brought in from his September garden. He also tells of making 21 grafts of five varieties of pears on an old pear tree in his yard.
Myron is more than a good gardener. He has become a talented artist in both drawing and water colors. His wife Esther is no less an artist in her making of beautiful hook rugs and quilts.
Our nursery is buried in snow but I'm on the point of leaving for Providence, R. I., to talk shop and place spring orders at the winter convention of the New England Nurseries Association. While there, I'll hope to see Boy Trott who lives nearby, and if I go on to New York, I'll hope for the good fortune of seeing our Newletter Editor SigLarmon, and others if time permits.
Fred Fraser in retirement in Cooperstown, N. Y., on reading that Newport, Vt., recently had the nation's lowest temperature, wrote me that his wife's grandfather once lived in our Vermont town a full century ago. Of Cooperstown Fred reports that last summer over three million visitors came to see its Baseball Hall of Fame. Let Disneyland look to its laurels!
How many of you can name the only out-of-state, licensed, fully accredited Maine guide in our Class? He made two seasonal sorties into Maine in 1971, returning to his home in Massachusetts with full quotas of you know what. Look for him in company with Penn Alborn and Abe Newmark at the March Alumni Dinner in Boston.
New 1914 stationery has just come from the printer. To see the changes in class officers and agents since last Reunion you have only to write me and on my answer you will see everyone's name, address, and zip number. Why not keep up to date?
Our deepest sympathy is offered to Jim Margessn of West Harwich, Mass., whose wife Anne Jane (Flieger) is reported to have died in Florida on January 15. Memorial services were held in Harwichport on January 25.
