Let it herewith be recorded that this was probably one of the most amazing basketball teams in Dartmouth history. Playing with four sophomores in the starting lineup, the Big Green won 18 games, lost only seven (the best record since 1944). Dartmouth also won the New England Tournament, defeated Connecticut twice, Holy Cross once and won four out of six games against the top three Ivy League teams - Princeton, Columbia and Penn. No team defeated Dartmouth twice this season. The Indians won nine, lost five in the Ivy League for a fourth place berth, but had Dartmouth won just one other Ivy game, the Big Green would have tied for first place in the league. That is how close it was.
The team under Coach Alvin "Doggie" Julian also set several records. Current national rankings place Dartmouth seventh among all college teams on defense. Captain Glenn Wilson broke Ed Leede's old record for the most points in one game when he accounted for 35 points against Columbia. Dartmouth's sophomore center Jim Francis set a new college mark by scoring 212 points against Ivy opponents, while the team point total of 1700 for the season was the highest in Dartmouth history.
Although Dartmouth's success was mostly a team effort, individual honors were accorded. Captain Glenn Wilson was named to both the Collier's and Look NCAA District I teams, while Wilson and Jim Francis were picked by the sports writers to the All-East team.
Since the last report in these columns, the Dartmouth five lost to Brown 41-52, defeated Columbia 84-63, Harvard 77-54 and Brown 52-41, lost to Holy Cross 56-53 and ended the season by whipping Cornell 74-62. The first Brown defeat was unexpected and due primarily to the fact that guard Gene Booth and center Jim Francis were both unable to play, while the Holy Cross defeat at Worcester was expected although awfully close.
Dartmouth's shooting average for the year was 36.4%, while the foul shooting average was 65.8%. The Indians averaged 68 points a game during the season. On an individual basis, center Jim Francis led the team with 14.4 points per game. Sophomore forward Ron Judson trailed him with a 12.2 average while Captain Wilson ranked third with 11.5 points.
With guards Glenn Wilson and Larry Freier and forwards Gene Givens and Tom McGreevey the only seniors on the squad, Dartmouth's hopes for next winter are very bright. And the freshman record of eight wins and two defeats would seem to indicate that next winter should be Dartmouth's year.
