Another brilliant freshman basketball team is in the making under the aegis of Coach Tony Lupien. So far the Indians are undefeated in four games with twin wins over Vermont and victories over St. Anselin's and Williams.
I Dave Farnsworth, a 6' 9" center of Jim Francis caliber, has teamed up with Captain Pete Barnes to spark the offense. Gary Vandeweghe. the other forward, has been averaging almost 15 points per game, and guards Walt Sosnowski and Chuck Kaufman are shooting well from the floor with a. 10-point average. The freshman team has a strong starting unit and good bench strength and should help the varsity considerably next winter.
Another good freshman team this winter is Coach Eddie Jeremiah's freshman hockey squad which defeated both the Northwood School and Yale before losing 2-1 to a strong Kimball Union Academy team. Starters for the three games to date have been Tom Wahman at goal, Rusty Ingersoll and Byran Ostebo, defense, and a first line of Chuck Coles, Mike Hollern and Bob Harvey.
Coach Jeremiah is highly pleased with his freshman team, both as to caliber and spirit. Some half-dozen players already look like top-notch varsity prospects, and more may develop as the season continues.
The Dartmouth freshman track team also showed promise as it rolled over the Harvard freshmen in the opening meet of the season. Karl Mayer and Rod Isaacson are both highly regarded in the shotput event, as are Bill Storm and Lyndell Carlin in the hurdles. Bill Boyle and Jack Nunn are the top middle-distance runners, with Don McGreevey and Bill Danforth leaders in the dash. Coaches Ellie Noyes and Guilford Joyner both regard this as one of the best freshman track teams in recent years.
The freshman swimming team has not opened yet, but here is another talented squad. Ail-American high school freestyle swimmers Dick Prior and Joe McHugh are backed up by Tom Travis, Burt Lloyd and Lloyd Lawrence, and Cal Raber is versatile in almost all events. John Turner in the butterfly and Charles Hill in the dive are other strong competitors.
