THE most significant curriculum innovation at Dartmouth this year was the new required freshman course, The Individual andthe College, offered in the first semester. The course developed "bugs" like any new undertaking, but it finished in a burst of glory with two guest lectures that excited the freshmen and won their thunderous applause. Excerpts from these two lectures - given by Dr. Alan Gregg, Vice President of the Rockefeller Foundation, and Amos N. Blandin Jr. '18, Associate Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court - are printed as this month's lead feature, under the heading The Education of a Freshman, beginning on Page 17 .

Those who know Dartmouth history know how the pro-slavery sentiments of President Nathan Lord led to his resignation in 1863. It was said, however, that "it was more pleasant to disagree with Dr. Lord than to agree with most men." This month's article (Page 28) by his great-grandson, Arthur H. Lord '10, tells what sort of a man it was about whom such a remark could be made.
