In mid-September Coach Ellie Noyes greeted an 18-man cross-country squad which faces a 1956 schedule of four dual meets, one triangular meet, and the annual Heptagonal and IC4A meets. The team will be led by Dartmouth's standout runner Doug Brew, who this past summer was named to the All-American Track Team for the half-mile event and who placed third in the N.C.A.A. half-mile and ran in the Olympic trial finals. Three other lettermen seniors John Hobbie and Don Burkhardt and junior John Ceely - are returning. Behind these four runners are, at this stage, a lot of question marks although Jonathan Stokesbary, a junior, and sophomores Michael Nolen (frosh captain), Michael Nau and John Capper must be considered on the basis of their performances to date.

Coach Noyes is ready to concede that at present the team is "slightly improved" over that of last year. The 1955 squad won three of seven dual meets and placed eighth in the Heptagonals. With virtually the same schedule, the Big Green should do somewhat better, but the competition is just too tough and the Indian runners lack both the overall talent and the depth to pull out in front.
