Our files on W. Bradlee Smith have beenvery meek for years, but now the curtain hasbeen rolled up, and here is the report onBrad's life in his own words:
Got your first nice birthday letter in Greece where I was stationed with the United States Navy for three years, 1951-1954, working as training advisor to the Royal Hellenic Navy. Interesting job. Was retired from the U. S. N. in October 1954 and in April 1955 went to work for the Department of Commerce as Fair Manager of the United States Central Exhibit at the International Trade Fair in Salonica, Greece. I loved Greece and was delighted to go back, even though it was for a short time, namely six weeks. I couldn't take my wife (I was married April 12, 1951, to Gloria Gayhormis of New York) and baby Gloria Gay Loomis Smith Jr. born in Wiesbaden, Germany (courtesy of the Air Force), November 19, 1953. The fair was a huge success. Ran from September 4 to September 27 and had 1,190,000 paid attendance of which 897,000 visited the United States Pavilion. We had 26,000 square feet of indoor space with closed circuit T. V. A home economics workshop stocked by Avco International where twelve Greek girls cooked, baked cakes, prepared and froze local fish, fruit and vegetables, made coffee, and generally were busy with the American way of kitchen life. Clothes washing, drying and ironing machinery was set up where we washed and ironed clothes. Funny enough, we washed all the girls' clothes each night so they would have a fresh appearance the next day. Also had radios and Hi-Fi music, courtesy of Stromberg Carlson. Also Ford Thunderbirds and Harley Davison motorcycles.
Outside we had 50,000 square feet devoted entirely to agriculture where two cows were being milked, and there were plenty of suckling pigs. There we prepared the soil for planting with Ford and jeep tractor attachments. All very animated. Then I left Athens for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to assist at the U. S. Government participation in the Silver Jubilee Fair. Here we had a small show with 10,000 square feet of floor space, but it was very interesting. From there I returned home in November 1955 - in January, 1956 I was off to Milan, Italy - back to the United States in June — in July, August, September and October 1956 I was back in Greece. Now I am home for a while.
This job of being manager of various United States government exhibits in National Trade Fairs emanated from a Dartmouth Club meeting in Washington in February 1955. Last week while having a "coffee" on the Via Veneto in Rome, who should I see but Pudge Neidlinger who was also abroad on business. Guess this brings the class up to date and I hope I will soon see some of my old classmates at 4407 36th Street South, Arlington, Va.
This week I received a copy of the Barre Daily Times, Barre, Vt., from Harold P. Hinman, a very loyal Dartmouth alumnus, who graduated a few years before we did. There was an editorial titled, "The George D. Aiken Testimonial Dinner," which went on to say:
...it was nice to hear among the congratulatory messages to Mr. Aiken, one from Lester E.Rich-wagon who, at one time, conducted the editorial column of this paper. In a fashion, we still envy him.
It might be remembered that Richwagon was for several sessions one of the most competent news men ever to cover the Vermont Legislature. He had had experience in the capitol city of Concord, N. H., for the Concord Monitor, also considerable newspaper experience in Portland, Maine, before the late Frank E. Langley brought him to Barre as assistant editor.
Here's a plug for Freddie Bailey who has an interesting side issue in which he publishes a book titled, "The Record of my Ancestry" or "Bailey's Photo-Ancestral Record." With one of these books you preserve your family history permanently in a beautiful book which is complete, accurate and easy to use. Freddie says a glance through the completed Record allows you to visualize your family background as never before.
Stirley Wilson, class secretary of 1916, writes that a 1923 man by the name of Malcolm Hubert has settled in the (his) town of Ormand Beach, Fla. Wilson has discovered also that Hubert is a singer, but regrets his taste runs to church music and he (Wilson) much prefers the barber shop variety.
