Our notes this month will be somewhat abbreviated in view of the publication of the gratifyingly long list of donors to the Alumni Fund.
On October 5 your Executive Committee held its annual meeting at the University Club in Bridgeport, Conn. Those in attendance were Fran Fenn, Rowley Bialla, Art Ruggles, Bill Ashe, Gus Farwell and your respectful servant as Secretary-Chairman. Gus again had secured for us the ample facilities of the University Club which is very convenient for the New York-New England area.
Highlights of the meeting included a report from Treasurer Ruggles, which revealed that in the period June 15, 1953-October 5, 1956, the Class acknowledged total receipts of $7,200. Expenditures amounted to $6,000, better than 80% of which represent payments to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for subscriptions to all class members. In addition to a balance of $1,200, mainly in a savings account, the Class is also the owner of a $1,000 Government Savings Bond. Rug again is to be congratulated on his long and successful tenure in office - a solid foundation amidst the shifting sands of class officerships. Please let's not fall down getting our dues to him. The second notice is now out; don't pass it up if you have not yet paid.
A further item on our agenda included a looking ahead to our 20th Reunion in 1958. The look at the moment was for a Reunion Chairman, and I am extremely pleased to announce that Carl Ray has acceded to my request, as the delegate of the Executive Committee, to act in that position. We are certain that Carl has the organizational talents this job requires. If he should later tap you to be an activities chairman, please try to help out. Needless to say, the subject of the most lengthy discussion at the meeting centered on our Memorial Fund to be presented to the College at our 25th Reunion. You have now received Fran Fenn's letter of October 18 which is a succinct positioning of this important matter. You will understand that this Class has not yet resolved what its goal is to be, but it is quite obvious that, in the history of each class's financial assessments of itself, the Memorial Fund is the supreme gesture. Therefore, since a Dartmouth class represents a body of considerable substance - and we are sure '37 is not below par - its Fund represents a substantial sum of money. We hope you will weigh carefully the role you hope to play in the formation of the Fund and then return the pledge cards to Iran. I'm sure you appreciate Fran's large role piloting this Class venture to an outcome which can satisfy us all. He has done an excellent job and his future performance promises to be just as good, despite the fact that the work gets tougher the closer we get to (can you believe it?) '62.
And that, excepting the small talk, is the substance of what we may call our Annual Report to the Class. Understandingly enough, Tudar Wall and Bill Cash could not be on hand from California and Minnesota, respectively. Surprisingly enough, however, at the end of October I met Carl Ray in Grand Central as he was waiting for Cash to show up. The latter was accompanying Carl home to spend a night with the Rays while east on a business trip. Bill has recently been moved from the advertising department at General Mills into executive personnel work. He and Nancy and family have just moved about twelve miles outside of Minneapolis where they have a lovely two-acre place. Says Bill, "Looks like a corner right out of New England." The Cashews entertained Marg and Mort Berkowitz as their first house guests. Mort was in the middle West on business. They took in the Minnesota-Illinois game and then enjoyed a small "joust" in the new quarters.
I was delighted to receive a letter from Thomas C. Ham, Secretary of the Class of '96, who furnished me with a report of the recent activities of his son-in-law and our classmate, Frank Irwin. Frank is a career man in the State Department and has served in Edinburgh (three years) and Tegucigalpa (two and one-half years) where he was an attache in the embassy. Last August he returned to Washington and is now assigned to the British Desk. He and Josephine have three children, including fourteen-year-old son, Terry.
I have more news which I shall have to hold until next month. But before closing I know you will all join with me in wishing a rapid recovery to good health for Bill Leonard who suffered a heart attack in the middle of October. A report at the end of the month indicated that he was "coming along fine."
