Despite severe cold weather the granite hills of New Hampshire still show only a mediocre snow cover and most of the early meets have been cancelled. The annual Hanover Invitational Cross-Country Relay Race and Jump was knocked out and the four-event meet at Lyndonville was shortened to two events by a similar lack of snow in early January.

In the Lyndonville cross-country competition, John Ceely finished fourth, with Dave Cassidy and Mai Hibbard in seventh and eighth places for the Indians. In the jumping Bob Richmond finished ninth for Dartmouth, with Bob Burton thirteenth and Bill Smith sixteenth.

But with Captain Pete Kirby and veterans Egil Stigum, Dave Harwood and Bill Smith in the alpine events and the possible return from the Olympics later of Chick Igaya, Coach Walt Prager can yet be optimistic. Next up - the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.

Captain Pete Kirby, who comes from St. Jovite, Canada, is one of the Dartmouth ski team's best bets in the downhill and slalom.
