In basketball Coach Julian's team showed some general improvement during the last part of the season, but continued to have their ups and downs, winning five games and losing four since the last report in these columns. The Big Green defeated Army 61-58, and then went on to upset the league leading Pennsylvania Quakers 65-55. But at Worcester the Holy Cross Crusaders made up for an earlier upset suffered at the hands of Dartmouth by thumping the Indians 99-50, the most decisive defeat that a Julian-coached team has ever taken. The Indians then lost to Columbia 63-59 but won over Harvard 74-66 and Hofstra 68-62. In the final three contests, all league encounters, the Big Green lost to Princeton 82-68, defeated Yale 80-62, and then lost to Cornell 80-55.

Generally speaking, the Dartmouth players ranked in scoring honors about the same throughout the season. Only two men, Captain Fred Gieg at forward and sophomore guard Glenn Wilson, were in the double-figures column; Gieg averaging 14 points per game and Wilson 11.

As far as the season goes, it was one of those that could have been better but might well have been worse. The Indians lost some close decisions and dropped some contests they should have won easily, such as the Amherst, Harvard and Boston College contests. On the other hand, the Indians scored upset victories over Holy Cross, Pennsylvania and Princeton, which on the basis of comparative records should have been defeats. What does count is that the record was far better than last season's and that the team gave promise of blossoming out into a real threat for next winter.
