After posting a December win over Springfield College, the varsity swimming team continued its winning ways in January by downing Navy, 51-33, and Amherst easily, 57-26. Although currently undefeated, Coach Karl Michael regards these early meets as warm-ups for the more rugged Ivy League contests in late January and February.

The Dartmouth swimmers captured eight of ten first places against Navy, but the Middies were strong and all the events were close. Captain Duke Hust took first place in both the 220-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Ernie Drosdick won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke. Bill Bahrenburg won the 440-yard freestyle for the Indians and Joe Hughes swept to an easy win in the dive. Dartmouth's 300-yard medley relay team of McCree, Karslake and Clark added other points.

Against Amherst Captain Duke Hust again annexed two wins, this time in the 440-yard freestyle and individual medley, while Drosdick captured the 100-yard free- style and then teamed with Don McCree and Skip Clark to win the medley relay event. Noel Sankey returned to form to win the dive, and senior Bill Sherman scored his first win of the season as he swam to a surprising victory in the 200-yard breast-stroke. Once again the Indians took eight of ten first places.

Eight dual meets including Princeton, Penn, Harvard, Yale, and Cornell remain on the schedule before the Eastern Intercollegiates at Cornell. Coach Michael predicts that before long his 1956 team will be tumbled from the ranks of the undefeated.

This quartet of pole-vaulters, coached by Assistant Track Coach Ed Styrna, gives Dartmouth exceptional strength in that event. Left to right are John Diggs '58, Will Springer '57, Captain Lou Metzger '56, and Bill Buchanan '56. Buchanan and Metzger both smashed the old College record in last month's meet at Cornell.
