Only one more month to go! Our Frantic 15th Reunion kicks off Friday, June 15. In addition to 1942 the classes of 1916, 1931, 1940, 1941 and 1946 will also celebrate their reunions the same weekend. Headquarters for 1942 will again be in Massachusetts, North Mass and South Mass. Smiling Al Britton is in charge of the 1942 class festivities and assures us that a fun-filled time is in store for us. If he just manages to come reasonably close to the job our other reunion chairmen turned in on the 5th and the 10th, our 15th Reunion will be a resounding success.
With the annual Alumni Fund campaign off to a flying start, we are well on our way to ward the $775,000 dollar goal. In fact, before the campaign commenced last month, about $30,000 had been contributed toward that goal. At the onset on April 1 our class had over $600 in the kitty toward our 1 goal of $9650. However, there's lots of digging still to be done if we are to reach that figure.
Last year student tuition fees paid only 47.5% of the operating costs of the College. Endowment income, gifts, the Alumni Fund and other sources made up the remainder. The Alumni Fund contributed 12.6% of the College's income in 1955. In addition to providing for the current operating expenses of the College, the Fund also helps support the Scholarship Program and contributes to increasing faculty salaries along with the Ford Foundation grant.
In its 41 years, the Alumni Fund has produced over $8,500,000 to "help keep Dartmouth strong today, stronger tomorrow." The 1955 Fund received $774,860 from 19,165 alumni, parents and friends of the College. Both figures represent record-breaking achievements, and the alumni participation percentage of 69.4% was a new high for all colleges and universities.
The Alumni Fund has come a long way from that first Fund campaign in 1915 which produced $6,580 from 536 givers. It is still run by the alumni and not by the College. For the individual alumnus the important thing is still the act of giving each year, not the amount of dollars. Each gift is welcomed on faith that it represents an amount proportionate to the donor's financial ability and interest in Dartmouth.
In 1955 it is interesting to note that Dartmouth had more contributors to the Alumni Fund than did either Princeton or Harvard with their comparable campaigns. However, it should also be pointed out that Princeton, Harvard and Yale all raised more money than we did.
The Class of 1942 has quite a record going in Green Derby competition. Matched against 1941, 1943, 1944 and 1945 Dick Lippman and his bevy of assistant Class Agents are in the midst of a winning streak of several years' duration. With all due respect to their efforts let's also remember that most of the 493 living graduates and the 138 living nongraduates of the Class of 1942 ought to be able to take a few bows for this record, too.
Further indication of the outstanding job "The Lip" is doing for us was made recently when he received the Harvey P. Hood Trophy, emblematic of the best record for class agents in classes 11 to 25 years out of college. Congratulations, Dick. Let's make this, your last year, the best ever!
In view of the Reunion let's try and top our $10,000 goal by June 15 so we can go around congratulating each other in Hanover. Get out the check book tonight and you'll have one less thing to try and remember to do manana (Span. 1).
Incidentally, out of 531 living alumni the Class of 1942 ought to be able to round up quite a group for the 15th Reunion. ChuckDrennan is another one who just needed to be coaxed a little. During Chuck's recent stopover in Detroit Charlie Sturz "put the arm on him" and claims to have sold him on the idea of going back to Hanover in June. Frankly, I don't see how this reunion deal should be too hard to sell. It's a "natural" where everybody wins. Now if we get a sitter we'll be all set.
It looks as though Bate Ewart won't be around for reunion. He's off again for overseas. This time Bate is to be a staff officer with the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Program in the Middle East. There was some talk of having his head examined for taking such an assignment at this time, but I guess the Ewarts just like to be where things are happening. A gala going-away party for them was an occasion for getting Polly and MikedeSherbinin, Pat and Gardie Bridge and Barb and Al Britton together with Nancy and Harry Bond at the latter's home in Hanover.
Dick Cardozo has been living in England for a year working as a surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital in London. Hanni and Bert Anger spent four months in Europe combining business and pleasure. Aside from having their car stolen, they had a very enjoyable time. High point of the whole trip was hearing "Dem Bums" win the World Series last fall - on short wave radio. The Angers will be in Hanover for reunion and so will Veralee and Loring Jones from out in DeKalb, Ill. How about you?
Bob Hill has been nominated by President Eisenhower to be Assistant Secretary of State. Since September Bob has been special assistant to Undersecretary Herbert Hoover Jr. on mutual security affairs. In his new position he will be Congressional liaison officer.
Jim Idema has forsaken the newspaper business in Grand Rapids, Mich., and is now peddling life insurance. He had worked for the Grand Rapids Herald for ten years, resigning last fall as city editor. Jim recently completed a course in the creation and arrangements of life insurance estates for Aetna in Hartford.
Max Eckardt and Sons, Inc. is now a part of the Thor Corporation. Harold Eckardt is a Thor vice president. This is really diversification, with Harold importing and manufacturing Christmas tree ornaments.
In Newburyport, Mass., Swifty Barnes has bought controlling interest in the Old Newbury Crafters, Inc., manufacturers of handwrought sterling silverware. The fifty-year-old company now employs four full-time workers and four more part time. Swifty had been with Towle Manufacturing Company as manager of market research.
Catherine and Lowell Peterson had their second son and fourth child born in Las Vegas in March.
Don't forget your check for the Alumni Fund. See you at Reunion in Hanover, June 15-17.
Secretary, 3548 Roland Drive Birmingham, Mich.
