My memory never has taken any prizes, but this time I think I'm right for a change. When Joe Palamountain was the "cover boy" on the January 23 issue of the HarvardAlumni Bulletin, he became the first '42 to be featured on a magazine cover. (That's a magazine?) Bob and Kay Gorman were in Life back in about 1941, as I recall, but they didn't make the cover. Joe is an assistant professor of Government and one of eight Allston Burr Senior Tutors at Harvard. At Adams house he manages the tutorial program, conducts tutorial sessions himself and acts as counsellor to students with personal or academic problems. The other half of his time is devoted to teaching, research, and writing. Joe took his Master's in political economy and government, and his doctorate in 1951 with a thesis on "The Politics of Distribution." He now teaches a course in government regulation of industry and is expanding his thesis into a book. And you thought you were busy!
The Assistant to the Secretary of the College, Michael McGean, writes to single out Ed Hodgson of Miami Springs, Fla., and Doug Riley of Dallas for their outstanding contributions in the recent regional conferences held about the country. Must be that the '42s aren't doing so badly after all.
In a similar vein word comes from DickLippman that he is finalizing his plans for the Alumni Fund effort. "The Lipp" is striving mightily to accommodate all of the requests he has had for places on the list of Assistant Class Agents. The following are already under contract, with another couple of dozen as yet unsigned: Rusty Hartranft, Ed Hawkridge, Dick Lee, Pete Link, George Liskow, Jim O'Mara, Dick Smith, Bob Strasenburgh, Charlie Weinberg, Milt Williams, Bob Burdett, Neil Barber, Dale Bartholomew, Rob Roy Carruthers, Dick Baldwin, Joe Logan, George McClintock, Bill Clark, Warner Wilson, John Tiernan, Art Henderson, Phil Moon, Eric Haessler, Fritz Heinbokel, George Hinkley, Dave List, Fred Main, Doc Martz, Jack Olson, Hank Reynolds, John Sewall, and Guy Swenson.
The Navy has sprung Don Gates and he's back in Milwaukee just in time to liven up our Green Derby effort with some cartoons. Bob Schoonmaker will be the editor of the Newsletter again and would welcome any news you can send him at 77 Scotch Lane, Rochester 17, N. Y.
Again this month we have a couple of items tor the "Round the Girdled Earth Department." The newspaper in Lowell, Mass., reports the visit of William Harris, noted lecturer, presenting his picture travelogue Germany Today. Since leaving Dartmouth Bill has acquired degrees from the University of Madrid, the University of Munich and the Arcangeli Institute of Milan.
Bax Lanius, our other current entry, is reported to be one of the top men in the Consulate General in Johannesburg, having transferred from Salzburg within the last year.
Back at the Mayo Clinic is Walt Eisennian after his second tour of duty in the Navy. He has a year to go on his fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology. Walt reports that Dick Hempstead is out of the Navy again and back in Spokane practicing urology. JackCrenshaw is in Salt Lake City in obstetrics and gynecology.
From Camp Pendleton, Calif., comes the word that Jim Robinson will soon be through with his second tour of duty with the Navy and on his way back to New Jersey. He is now certified as a medical specialist by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
George Tobias and his bride chose to spend the second half of their honeymoon on a trip in their Jaguar from Omaha to Hanover. George reports that the Charlie Hunts have a new baby boy.
Aileen and George McClintock send greetings from Minneapolis, where George is specializing in corporate work in his law practice tice. Their family now stands at two girls, one boy, and one dog.
As families go the Hans Huessys are setting quite a pace, with three girls and three boys now to their credit. They are living in a house 160 years old in Glens Falls, N. Y.
The New York '42'5 had a recent get-together, which included Frank Bartlett, DonAmy, Dick Baldwin, Warren Kreter, BillFriend, Charlie Weinberg, Bert Anger, BobEncherman, Dick Nehring, and Roy Carruthers. Johnny Mendes regaled the boys with tales of Korea and Japanese geisha girls.
Paul Vaitses received some sterling support from Ad Winship, Bob Taylor and Ed Pingree in his unsuccessful bid for the mayor's spot in Melrose. Paul sounds like a guy who is going to come back strong.
So you would like to be in business for yourself? Maybe we can get Ralph Morrison to tell us how it can be done. The work is, that Ralph has started his own home construction business.
Dave Sills writes that he is still a research associate at Columbia's Bureau of Applied Social Research in New York. Bud Dutton is in Charleston, S. C.
The female of the species has Bob Burdett thoroughly outnumbered, to say the least. Not only are the three children girls, but even the dog and cat in the Burdett household are females. Bob is teaching biology at Thayer Academy and delivering wholesale milk in the off season.
Another salesman has to be counted in now in the person of Larry Holfelder. He has recently become an abrasive sales engineer with the Norton Co. in Worcester, Mass.
Rog Robison, way out in Fort Benton, Mont., wants to know whether there is a minister in the class besides him. For that matter he hasn't found any Dartmouth people out there in the wide open spaces.
Dexter's seems to be doing pretty well if you can judge by the '42s who have visited Dex and Genelle Richards at their Sunapee hostelry recently. The Cliff Fullers, Al Thompsons, Dick Maxwells, Joe Nasons, FredNichols, Johnny Luetters, and Paul Costellos all signed in and more are on the way. Dex that must really be the life.
