The fall of 1957 marks the opening of the third year of regular monthly luncheons for Dartmouth men below 14th Street in New York City. The group came together mostly out of inertia because of the concentration of alumni in business in the area. From a small list of fourteen three years ago, almost 300 alumni have been located in the area and the list is ever growing. The Downtowners meet at Schwartz's Restaurant, 54 Broad Street, every second Wednesday of the month from October to May. The luncheon itself begins promptly at 12:30, but a social half hour, for those who can afford the time, is held from 12:00 to 12:30.
Each month a speaker, usually a Dartmouth man, tells of some phase of his business or alumni activity which would be of general interest to the group. Speakers in the past have included such men as: Carl Ray '37, Courtney Brown '26, Vic Borella '30, Howland Sargeant '32, Bill Morton '32, Doug Storer '21, Pudge Neidlinger and Jack Hubbell '21, to mention only a few.
The Downtowners are an informally organized group with no dues required and prior attendence in Hanover the only prerequisite. The group is headed by a Steering Committee composed of Perry J. Davis '54, Paul VVoodberry '49, Roy Abbott '52, Ray Hedger '29, Ort Hicks '21 and Ralph Smith '46.
The Downtowners welcome anyone who is located in the area. Visiting alumni from other parts of the country who would like to attend can check with Perry Davis (WOrth 4-4151) to find out how to get to Schwartz's.
