By mid-September, as this issue went to press, Dartmouth's varsity soccer and cross-country teams had just begun work-outs. Veteran Coach Tom Dent, now in his 32nd year of coaching at Dartmouth, faced another rather poor season. Last year the Big Green booters won only three games in ten, losing all but one of five Ivy League contests. This fall the soccer team again faces ten opponents, including six Ivy League teams. Captain Tony Gittes at left half and veteran Randy Malin, All-Ivy goalie in 1956, are the top returning players with a half dozen more veterans and a few potentially strong sophomores to make up the first team.
In cross country, Coach Ellie Noyes expects an "about average" season. For the first time in years Dartmouth lacks the services of a really outstanding number one runner now that Doug Brew has graduated. However, the 1957 team may have more depth than the teams of the past few years, and this may in part offset the absence of Brew. Leading the Dartmouth harriers is Captain Dick Nau, while other lettermen include Pete Marshall and Tom Lennox, who ran consistently well last fall, and John Ceely, who returns to action after a year's absence to study in France. A trio of sophomores - Art Pritchard, Bob Becker and Bruce Barnes - will help the varsity.
The Dartmouth Rowing Club, under new head coach Pete Gardner, picks up after a fine spring season and hopes to take further steps into big-time rowing during the fall and next spring. Dartmouth's informal rugby team, one of the strongest in the East, also has contests scheduled this fall in preparation for next spring. Golf and tennis will get into the act with their traditional fall tournaments.
