With Thanksgiving only a couple of weeks away, we still have some news from last June. As you may have noticed in the MAGAZINE for July, Jus Stanley was elected president of the General Alumni Association at its annual meeting in Hanover in June. We are indeed honored to have one of our number elected to this post of importance among the alumni. At the same time, as was previously reported here, Jack Masten was elected as a memberat-large of the Dartmouth Alumni Council to serve a three-year term. These elections are deserved recognition for the efforts of both Jus and Jack in alumni matters on behalf of the College.
It is with sorrow that we report the death of Bill Gibbons of Houston on September 12, in Washington, D. C., of a heart attack.
Thanks to Coggy Broer '27 we caught the article under Music in the September 23 issue of Time concerning the new Columbia Records album by Paul and Jo Stafford Weston entitled "The Piano Artistry of Jonathan Edwards," there called "Currently the liveliest sleeper on the market. In the album's cover picture, two right hands linger over the keyboard, but the unwary buyer who fails to catch this subtle warning is in for an ear-jolting shock." It sounds like fun.
Your Executive Committee decided that there should be published as part of our 25th Reunion, a 25-Year Class Book. The Editorial Board will consist of chairman John Meek, Ted Okie and Wes Beattie. They will be assisted by an Editorial Advisory Board consisting presently of Don Wood,John Monagan, June Drowne, John Faegre,Bob Cox, Charlie Grob, Tom Hall and PaineKnickerbocker. You will be' hearing more from these fellows before June because there is certain information and, possibly, pictures that they need from each one of us in order to do this job right. Anyone who wishes to become a member of the Editorial Advisory Board, please contact Meek in Hanover or your reporter.
Of particular interest to fathers and mothers in our age group is an article written by Lyle M. Spencer and recently appearing in the Herald Tribune's This Week magazine entitled "How To Get Into College And Stay There." It's a problem many of us face with our kids.
The October 3 issue of the Wellesley Townsman announces that Byron O. McCoy of the engineering firm of Chas. T. Main, Inc. of Boston has been elected vice-president of Vermont Electric Power Co., Inc. and will live in Rutland after November 1. Byron's job will be the construction of facilities for maintenance and transmission of St. Lawrence power throughout the state of Vermont. This sounds like a big job, Byron, and we certainly congratulate you for it. Incidentally, the McCoys have a son who is a sophomore at Dartmouth.
Weird comes to us from Chicago that Illinois State Representative Bob Coulson (R-Waukegan), an attorney, recently took the examination for substitute teacher in Lake County's 69 school districts. Bob, you will remember, resigned as mayor of Waukegan last January after he was elected to the Illinois General Assembly. If Bob is called as a substitute teacher to Waukegan's Glen Flora Elementary School, he may find himself teaching his two sons, John and William, or if he should be called to Daniel Webster Junior High School, he might find himself teaching his daughter Barbara. Ken Spang please take note - here is a double-barreled prospect for you.
A recent intensely interesting account in the Providence Bulletin told how Prof. Lorrin A. Riggs of the Brown University Department of Psychology has been awarded the Howard Crosby Warren medal, one of the highest a psychologist can receive. It is given annually by the Society of Experimental Psychologists for "distinguished contribution to experimental psychology," and in Lorrin's case it recognized his work in recording electrical potentials from the human brain. Lorrin has achieved international renown for his development of means for direct study of the behavior of the live human eye. He has measured the electrical impulse between the eye and the brain in response to light stimulation and has measured eye movements under diverse conditions. Lorrin has done a great deal of exacting research work for the government.
