"It's not often that a man has a chance to rend to his own obituary," writes Jim Friedmand to refute correct, and otherwise amend previous notice in this column that he had been eased out as chief of staff for Governor John J. Gilligan in Ohio.
"Like Mark Twain," Jim goes on, "the reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated Despite the fact that I have returned to the private practice of law in Cleveland after finishing my stint (with Governor Gilligan), I remain quite involved."
Evidently. Gilligan appointed Jim in July to the five-member Ohio Civil Rights Commission to which he has been devoting considerable effort and in which he sees signs of genuine progress, Jim also remains deeply involved in state Democratic politics and during the '72 election worked as a consultant for Governor-Elect Dan Walker in Illinois and Congressman Michael Harrington's successful reelection campaign in Massachusetts.
All in all an impressive list of activities for someone whose political demise we reported only recently. According to a political writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, however, Jim "has the guts of a cat burglar and a stubborn streak like a mule."
It is early in the morning in the complaint room of New York City's Criminal Court Building. Assistant District Attorney William Purcell is following the routine he has been following much of the year since joining the staff of DA Frank Hogan. Interviewing complainants and arresting officers, Bill had already written up cases involving theft of a $45 wristwatch, an alleged kidnapping and theft of $52, a robbery at gunpoint, a forged driver's license, and the illegal possession of a gun.
"We try to determine how strong a case we have," Ollie explained recently to a New YorkTimes reporter. "In cases where there is a complainant, we try to determine whether he will cooperate and be available. In cases where there is physical evidence, like a gun or drugs, we have to determine whether these could withstand defense motions for suppression on illegal search and seizure,"
The reporter provided some further insight to Bill's work: "After listening to the accounts of the policeman and complainant in each case, Mr. Purcell weighed the factors and then dictated notes and a summary of the crime, both to be routed to Arraignment Court. Such notes form the basis of moves made at the arraignment by another assistant district attorney, who usually does not have a chance to speak to the arresting officer."
And justice grinds inexorably on.
Is there a doctor in the house? Most definitely. Mike Leone has completed his general surgical training at the University of Vermont and is serving two years with the Army at Fort McClellan, Ala. Serving with him are wife Ginny and son John ... John Goellner is in Guam doing pathology with the Navy. "Know of any Dartmouth people out here in the South Pacific?" he asks. (Do we note a tinge of panic?) ... JayReibel, a teaching assistant and senior resident in psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, recently attended a NATO workshop in Brussels. He was one of ten representatives of nongovernmental organizations who participated in what the Department of State described as an opportunity "to gain first-hand, in-depth understanding" of the operations of NATO, the Common et, and the U. S. Embassy. These are called junkets in the trade .... Jim Cogswell expects to finish his residency in radiology this June at the Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver. He will practice in Hood River, Oregon. ... Up in Duluth, Steve Bloom will be entering 0B-Gyn practice in July. Steve is married to the former Susan Murray. Son Jason arrived last March.
At home abroad: Jeff Rosen, teaching in the marine biology department at the University of Dares Salaam, Tanzania, and spending each day on the golden shores of the Indian Ocean. ("I still don't believe it.").... Pete Stevenson, serving as deputy manager of the Chase Manhattan Bank in Seoul, Korea. A going away present, Julie Melvina, their second daughter, arrived in August.
Men of business: John Bell has been named manager of marketing and market research for Chemetron Corporation's industrial gases division, which markets such ethereal products as argon, helium and acetylene. John went to Chemetron, which is based in Chicago, from Quaker Oats Company where he was manager of planning for grocery products.... The First National Bank of New Orleans has appointed JoeKennedy as accounting officer and assistant controller. Joe previously was with Boeing.
As though there were no shortage of schools in the world, Steve Spahn recently co-founded the International School of London with Sir Maurice Bowra. Steve also has been elected to the Explorer's Club (that's not a Boy Scout organization), a trustee of the Performing Arts Repertory Theatre, and a trustee of the William Alanson White Institute which was founded by Erich Fromm and Harry Stark Sullivan. Pretty good for a guy who started with only a jump shot.
