Injuries, bad breaks and lack of scoring punch were the main causes for one of Dartmouth's poorest soccer seasons. The Indian booters won only two games, lost six and tied two to finish in the Ivy League basement.
In the most recent contest with Cornell, which closed out the season, Dartmouth upset the favored Big Red to win 2-0. Right wing Don Betterton scored one goal and passed to inside left John Wardman for the second. Both goals came in the second period and the Dartmouth defense. held Cornell scoreless for the balance of the contest.
Pirior to that the Dartmouth team had lost to M.I.T. 4-2, with the Techmen scoring twice in the final period after an even game. John Wardman made both Dartmouth scores.
Four days earlier the Big Green had scored a minor upset by stopping Amherst 3-8 for the first victory of the season. Don Betterton scored two. goals for the Indians and Cick -Guerrero one, while Bob Rhines and Jim Kennedy played an outstanding game up front and goalie Randy Malin turned in a stellar performance in the nets.
The Yale game in New Haven was perhaps the roughest of the fall, with Gene Scott scoring for the Elis with only two minutes left to play and Yale winning 1-0.
Against Williams, the Big Green got away to an early lead, but the Ephmen tied the game at 4-all in the final period as Dartmouth recorded its second tie game of the fall. Sophomore Bobby Rhines collected one goal and one assist, with John Wardman, Jim Kennedy and Charlie Pinkerton each scoring once.
In a late October contest Dartmouth was shut out by Harvard 2-0 in Cambridge. The Crimson scored twice within ten seconds in the second stanza and fought off a late Indian attack to win.
The 1957 Dartmouth soccer team was better than its record would indicate. The defense was generally effective, but the attack never quite developed the scoring punch needed.
