With Big Green Teams
December 1957

THE Dartmouth-Princeton football finale on Saturday, November 23, rang down the curtain on Dartmouth's 1957 fall sports schedule and the Big Green winter teams prepared to take over the spotlight.

Overall the Indian teams this fall compiled just about a .500 average. In contrast to recent years, Dartmouth's fighting football warriors compiled the most impressive record, winning seven games and tying one prior to the Princeton clash. The soccer team, falling on hard times, won two games, tied two and lost six; and the cross-country runners chalked up wins over two teams while losing to three. The jayvee football squad split evenly, winning two and losing two. So varsity totals show almost an even split of thirteen wins, eleven defeats and three ties.

Dartmouth's freshman teams, usually stronger than varsity squads, barely got over the .goo mark. The freshman football A team won two and lost three, while the frosh B team had two wins and no defeats. The '61 soccer squad showed potential, winning five and dropping two, while the freshman cross-country had but two wins against four losses. The freshman totals were eleven victories and nine losses, and the cumulative total for all varsity and freshman teams added up to 24 wins, so losses and three ties.

It's much too early to make any sound observations or predictions on the Dartmouth winter sports outlook. Coach Julian's basketball team looks promising, Coach Jeremiah reports the hockey outlook as "optimistic," Karl Michael can be counted upon to produce another strong swimming squad, Red Hoehn promises a good squash team, and Dartmouth's track team under Ellie Noyes could surprise. Al Merrill has the Big Green skiers working out and with the NCAA Championships at Dartmouth in March the Indians could go all the way.
