The Indian basketball team closed out the season with eight straight losses, including back-to-back road trouncings by Yale and Brown. The Elis rolled over the Green 81-66 and in so doing clinched the Ivy League crown. In that contest Spahn had 25 points, including fifteen for fifteen from the foul line, a new Dartmouth record for free throws made in one game.
Against Brown in the season's finale, the Green led 23-12 midway through the first half, only to blow the lead and trail 39-37 at the intermission. In the second half, despite a tremendous performance by Spahn, the Indians faltered 93-78. The Great Neck junior scored 41 points, erasing Ron Judson's record for a single game (37 points) which was set against Brown back in 1956. Spahn also eclipsed Rudy LaRusso's record for the most points in a single season with 553 points in 24 games. Laßusso's mark of 529 was established in 1958-59 over 28 games.
At the same time Spahn broke La-Russo's record for the most points scored against Ivy League competition in one season. The old mark was 296, while Spahn's new record is 325, enough to give him league scoring honors for the season.
It was fitting that Spahn should be named to the official All-Ivy Second team, as well as UPI's All-New England first team and AP's second All-New England quintet. Thus with a shattering of records the 1961-62 basketball season ended. Although it was disappointing from a won-and-loss aspect, Dartmouth fans still had a great deal to cheer about.
