In our previous issue, we recorded that Earl Wiley had been doing a series of broadcasts on the subject of Lincoln. Now comes a notice from Earl noting his retirement as professor at Ohio State in which he says, "About 100 attended the recognition dinner for me, March 9. Albert Chandler was among them and spoke of our Dartmouth antecedents."

Now comes the sad and ironic notice of Albert Chandler's death from a heart attack on March 22 at his home in Worthington, Ohio. Only recently, we told of a club that he was instrumental in originating in Columbus a club for "Old Guys and Dolls," as it was called. Albert had attained fame as a Doctor of Philosophy. How little we know of tomorrow.

Happy to have our first word from John(Dolly) Gray from San Francisco. He writes, "I'm afraid that Hanover is out for me both this year and next. I retire on April 16, 1958 to become a farmer and I understand that June is the time you have to do something or other to the crops. I haven't gotten that far in the book yet." Come on, John. The Lord will provide.

Webb Evans and Priscilla had come East to Clearwater, Fla., and were expecting to visit with Art Soule and the bunch at Vero. Art writes that he had a wire from Webb that because of illness, they were returning to the West. We don't know the details but it's hard luck all around. Let's hope the news gets better.

From our good Maine correspondent, Jack Everett, comes the unhappy news that his wife, Gladys, fell and fractured her hip, though she is getting along as successfully as could be expected. Jack says that he ranges around Augusta and Hallowell, attends Legislative hearings and city meetings, but "I have to be home by sundown. I'll be back in circulation some time this summer."

Warren Hale - let's call him "String" as we used to, and his wife left the last of March for three months in Europe in the course of which time he will be attending the International Rotary Convention in Lucerne. They are to return the last of June which will prevent his usual attendance at the informal reunion in Hanover.

Art O'Shea has recently been appointed to the New Hampshire Development and Planning Commission. In his spare time, he is also President of the Laconia National Bank, President of the Laconia Development Corp., President of his Business and Vice Pres. of the N. H. Business Development Corp. Art believes that as a man grows older, he should relax a bit.

As of April 1 we have word from the Dartmouth Clinic at Vero Beach which sounds very elucidating. Mike Stearns, our President playboy, is shepherding the gathering and reports much enthusiasm, much action but states that a peculiar change has taken place by which the preference of our class for Coca Cola has been displaced by bourbon and water. What could have happened? It may have been the swimming pool or the exhausting game of shuffleboard, but boys at our age should be careful. Oh, that I were there to caution. Mike sends a list of those in attendance, alphabeticus as follows: Walter and Mrs. Furman, Roger and Mrs. Hill, John and Mrs. Hinman, Ben Knox, Amos and Mrs. Lamphear, George and Mrs. Lowe, Dick and Mrs. Merrill, Art and Mrs. O'Shea, Harry Rogers, Art and Mrs. Soule, Mike Stearns, Bert and Mrs. Thorpe, and Bert and Mrs. Thwing, Larry and Mrs. Treadway. The above were all '08ers. Honorary members present were Jim Douglas of Utica and Albert Perry of Scarsdale. Also present from other classes were Mr. Merrill '94, Harry and Mrs. Johnson '04, Allyn and Mrs. Smith '05, Mr. and Mrs. Rice '09, John and Mrs. Pearson '11, Mr. and Mrs. Brown '14, Dutch and Mrs. Slagel '26, and four good friends from Amherst '13 and '17.

It was good to have a note from George Lowe from Cleveland from whom we would like to hear more often. He expressed the hope to attend the Vero clinic. He was there, too. How about a junket to Hanover, George?

This is the last opportunity to remind you of the informal gathering of '08ers in Hanover June 6-8. If you plan to be there send in your application to Mason Ingram, Bursar, who will take care of things for you. Preliminary word is that we will be lodged in Middle Massachusetts. This will be good practice for our 50th next year.
