Another cause for sorrow is the death of Bruce Rutherford which occurred January 22, at his home in Zephyrhills, Fla., at the age of 77. He had been ill for several months. The interesting story of his engineering career will appear elsewhere in the MAGAZINE.
Phil Flanders hangs up his shoes. A letter from Phil states that he now considers it time to fish and do his home work. He also helps others with their tax returns which he says is more fun than working on his own.
New honors for Earl Wiley. Earl has been appointed by Governor O'Neill as chairman of the Ohio Lincoln Sesquicentennial committee and also as a member of the Civil War Centennial Commission of Ohio. Earl is considered one of the country's leading authorities on Lincoln and is prominently sought as a speaker. He recently acted as chairman of a Lincoln-Douglas debate memorial meeting.
Things are "vero good at Vero." It may be hard for some of you Eskimos to imagine a bunch playing shuffleboard and seeking the shade while awaiting their turn, or to see the mermaids frolic in the Royal Park Inn swimming pool, but it's all true. Weather as balmy as June in Hanover; food such as only served in Treadway Inns, plenty of fun and comfort all day long —and the cutest little cocktail lounge you ever saw. Can you imagine a Dartmouth '08 man particularly who wouldn't prefer that to shovelling snow or slush? Well, plan to come down around March 25 when Innkeeper Treadway opens his pocketbook and pays one third of the cost himself. You just can't afford to miss the fun. Come and join the bunch.
Dartmouth in Palm Beach. Not strictly a class item, but interesting. It seems that "Hoppy" was sojourning at Sea Breezes, Palm Beach, one of the Treadway Inns (adv.). About forty Dartmouth men in the vicinity of various vintages persuaded him to join them on January 15, at Testa's, an excellent eating place. After luncheon he spoke briefly. "Hoppy" looked fine and a good time was had by all. I went along with Larry and Dick Treadway '36. Everyone there had a name and it wasn't their fault that I didn't get them - fallen arches you know.
A letter from the College News Service states that the Capital Gift campaign has already received over $12,000,000 of the $17,000,000 sought. That's over seventy per cent with six months more to go.
