Larry Marshall is our lifesaver of the month. Fortunately, his letter is worth quoting substantially in full.
"So here is a rundown on our travels in January and February, for what it may be worth. Peggy and I understand the affinity of many '24 brothers and wives for Arizona and Florida, but aren't they overlooking the charm of the Alps in midwinter? We try every year or two to visit what, we term 'the land of enchantment,' Switzerland. This year our package deal tour took us to Kitzbuhel for a week in Austria and to Flims for another week in Switzerland. It was with a winter sports group with whom we have been involved on a number of similar trips in the past. If you don't ski, and we don't any more, there is always climbing, hiking, and exploring. We took thoroughly enjoyable day-trips to Bolzana, Innsbruck, Salzburg, and surrounding historic places: Last year I gave my downhill skis to my only grandson, W. L. Marshall IV, a junior at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Last year Peggy and I decided to quit downhill while we were slightly ahead. Over a space of years our score of ski mistakes is nothing to be proud of Three severe sprains, two dislocations, two broken ankles, one broken hip, and one very bad multiple fracture of the lower leg (Peggy). This leg was set on the Taft trail, yes, by Sel Hannah '35, who at that time, having been a big-time competitive skier in Hanover, was head of the Cannon Mountain ski patrol. Her recovery in the Littleton Hospital (N.H.) was expertly supervised by Les Sycamore, of considerable North Country fame. Long ago one of our ski instructors was Wes Blake, Outing Club enthusiast, mountain climber, ski runner, and explorer. I enumerate our various injuries as they seem to provide eloquent proof of Blakie's expertise as a ski instructor. Always emphasizing care and safety as well as proficiency and grace."
Betty and I are looking forward to Class Officers Weekend in Hanover on May 3 and 4 and to "Europe 40 years After" in June with our son Duke's classmate, Professor Frank Smallwood '5l, as lecturer, guide, and instructor. Two weeks on the Vistafjord with stops which include Gdynia, Leningrad, Stockholm, and Copenhagen, as well as side trips around London at the start and to Hamburg and the Berlins at the end. We certainly hope to find a classmate or two or at least some near contemporaries in' the group of travelers.
After the great job we did in setting a 60 year reunion record gift last year to the Alumni Fund, the request for a plug on this year's Fund may seem unnecessary. It would be nice to win our Green Derby classification this year. All ye laggards pay heed.
