FORD H. WHELDEN '25, executive secretary of the Bequest and Estate Planning Program, has announced that 19571958 was the third . best year in Dartmouth's history in the field of bequests. The $1,514,228 that came in from 27 bequests was surpassed only in 1927-1928 and 1940-1941.
Eight of the bequests were from women and their total was 1383,000. In the past thirty years only two years have passed without a bequest from a Dartmouth woman, and in those thirty years out of a total of 313 bequests 72, or over onethird, have come from women.
The largest bequests of the past fiscal year were as follows: L. Herbert Ballou, a Brown graduate and long-time friend of Dartmouth, $622,679; George M. Davidson, Class of 1880, $177,752, and his wife, Grace H. Davidson, $334,500; Sydney E. Junkins, Class of 1887, $92,582; Luther T. Townsend, Class of 1859, $60,000; John D. Warren, Class of 1915, $52,427; and Edwin R. Bartlett, Class of 1904, $50,000.
In addition to the amount received from bequests, the College received $371,450 in the form of estate planning gifts, and $89,268 in the form of receipts from trusts in the hands of others. The grand total received under the Bequest and Estate Planning Program was $1,974,946.
