Swimming at Dartmouth continued strong this winter under Coach Karl Michael, with eight wins and only three defeats in dual competition. Since last report, the Dartmouth swimmers posted an easy win over Springfield 57-29, lost to the two top teams in the East, 64-25 to Harvard and 52-34 to Yale, then swept over Amherst 53-33, Penn 68-18 and Princeton 51-35.

Dartmouth's freestyle aces - Ernie Drosdick, Bill Bahrenburg and John Graf - continued their winning ways with Drosdick winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races against Springfield, Penn and Princeton, and Bahrenburg and John Graf placing one-two in the 220-yard freestyle and 440 against the same competition.

John Graf was the only winner against Yale as he took the 400-yard individual medley, while Drosdick placed second in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.

John Daniels and Walt Clark in the butterfly races and Pete Anderson and Neil Sween in the backstroke accounted for first and second places in the Princeton and Amherst meets, while Stu Summer and Bob Michael added important points in the diving competition.

Against stiff competition at the Eastern Intercollegiates at Harvard, Graf placed fourth in the 1500-meter freestyle and fifth in the 440-yard race. Bill Bahrenburg came in fifth in the 220-yard freestyle and sixth in the 440, while the Big Green swimmers placed sixth in the 400-yard relay and sixth in the 440-yard medley relay.

With losses only to Yale, Harvard and Navy three top Eastern teams Dartmouth completes another successful swimming season.

With a little ingenuity the Dartmouth crew last month provided itself with a rowing tank not the type that costs $100,000 or more but, as can be seen above, the type that costs only the hard work involved in cutting a square hole in the ice in Occom Pond. In their anchored barge, 16 oarsmen at a time can practice their strokes in real water. Freshman crew coach Phil Cole stands on the runway.
