Last year Dartmouth's usually strong soccer team fell victim to injuries, sickness and other problems which helped create one of the poorest records in recent years. This fall Coach Tom Dent is optimistic that the Indian booters will be back to normal and that they "will give any team on the schedule a run for their money."
The squad has been working out at twice-a-day sessions since September 10 and Coach Dent's optimism is based on the return of ten lettermen plus a betterthan-average squad of sophomores. However, Dent is frank to admit that the Big Green will have a strong first team only and that depth could be a problem if injuries should crop up. Accidents have already taken some toll. Bobby Rhines, a letter-winning center halfback, was injured in an automobile accident this summer and is out for the season, and one of the brightest sophomore prospects, Bob Brigano, broke his leg in practice and will be lost for some time.
The returning lettermen are led by Captain Randy Malin, all-Ivy League goalie last year, and include Jack Zipes, who has been shifted from fullback to left halfback, Mitch Engle at center half, Fritz Arens at right halfback, and Nick Muller, who played forward last fall but has been shifted to fullback. Veterans on the forward line include Don Betterton at outside right and Jim Kennedy, John Wadman and Sam McMurtrie at inside left.
In the sophomore group, Larry Holden has been shifted from center forward to halfback and looks promising, while last year's freshman captain, Dave Blake, may win a starting berth at fullback. Halfback Bob Evans and Fred Field, a talented player at outside left, are other sophomores making a bid for a first-team berth.
