1958 ALUMNI FUND REPORT
DECEMBER 1958 William G. Morton '28,

CHAIRMAN 1956-1958

Dartmouth's 44th annual Alumni Fund Campaign is now history, and while no new records were set the final results, which show that 14,361 alumni, parents and friends contributed $455,300, have perhaps far greater significance for the future of the Alumni Fund than the glamorous and recordbreaking campaigns of recent years.

1958 was a difficult year in many ways for the Alumni Fund. It was important that we maintain Dartmouth's traditional leadership and strength on an annual giving basis, yet it was equally important that this effort be coordinated with Dartmouth's all-important Capital Gifts Campaign. The Alumni Fund Committee, after much thought, developed a plan to conduct the 1958 Alumni Fund Campaign on a participation basis only among those alumni and parents who were not being approached last spring for Capital Campaign gifts.

The results were both amazing and heart-warming as over 14,000 alumni and parents contributed almost half-a-million dollars to the Alumni Fund while during this same period some 3,000 alumni, parents and friends made pledges and gifts to Dartmouth's Capital Gifts Campaign totaling over $5 million.

Frankly, the 1958 Alumni Fund results exceeded the fondest expectations of the Committee. Perhaps more importantly we were able to preserve our truly magnificent Class Agents organization during this period. Most other institutions, faced with a capital campaign, have either given up the annual alumni fund or conducted a token appeal.

Elsewhere in this report you will find a complete report on results. As usual, the results are due to the fine efforts of our 2,300 Class Agents who worked diligently under the difficulties of a coordinated campaign and, of course, to the devotion and support of our Dartmouth alumni and parents who year in and year out provide those annual resources which are Dartmouth's life blood.
