THE Dartmouth Trustees at their fall meeting authorized the developing of plans and asking for bids on two additions to Baker Library. An expenditure of approximately $100,000 for the new construction is estimated.
One of the additions will be in the courtyard now separating the library from Carpenter Hall; the other will be in an inner courtyard, wholly within the library complex. The inner courtyard will be filled in with two stack levels, on top of which will be another partial story on the main-floor level for administrative office use. The addition between Baker and Carpenter will also be two stack levels high.
The library enlargements will provide more suitable work and storage space for the Stefansson Polar Collection and the College Archives. The Stefansson Collection will occupy the present Archives space and a portion of the new area. The Archives will be moved to the inner addition, adjacent to larger and more economical storage space, and the space vacated by the Stefansson Collection will be added to the regular stack storage area.
Richard W. Morin '24, the College librarian, stated, "The Stefansson Collection's present quarters are simply inadequate for the ever-increasing number of persons, both from the College and visiting scholars, who want to use the facilities."
The Trustees also authorized construction of a four-car garage off Lebanon Street near the heating plant to house college vehicles. Its roof design will be similar to that planned for the Hopkins Center and will allow the builders to experiment with insulation and roofing materials to be used on the Center.
In addition the Trustees allocated more funds to combat Dutch elm disease, a blight that has killed eighteen trees in Hanover in the past year.
