February, a month of the year traditionally eventful for public functions of all varieties, was highlighted by the dinner for Dr. Hopkins in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on February 5. Bruce Friedlich and Frank Hall worked very hard to organize a pre-dinner class gathering. Stu Steffey wrote me that he expected to be on hand for the big event and for the winter meeting of the Alumni Council, held prior to the big event.

John Williams recently rendered to Stu a detailed account of his geological exploits in Saudi Arabia. John has been in Saudi Arabia for over six years with the Arabian American Oil Company, except when his employer gets good-hearted and permits him to return stateside every two or three years for a brief vacation. Presently he is geologist and party chief of an exploration party in the southern part of the country. He has just finished dragging his party 950 miles from one part of the country to the other, drilling for geological information for the location of oil. John has only been on this assignment for a couple of months. Prior to that he spent three and one half years doing geology on oil wells in established fields and "wildcat" wells. Before that he was a surface geologist, mapping the geology exposed on the earth's surface. He is now anxiously awaiting a welldeserved respite from these arduous chores by way of a vacation back to the U.S.A. this summer.

Another absentee from the good old U.S.A. for a long time is Dick Jachens. Captain Dick has been away from the states since 1954 with the Air Force. He has been in Tokyo for the last two years with his family. Major Clayton and Evelyn Gray are their neighbors at a nearby air base and Lt. Col. Phil Hallam lives up the street from Dick. Dick, his wife and three children are so fond of life in Japan that they are reluctant to show any enthusiasm for their May assignment in Washington, D.C.

It is now in order to break the good news about Don Stillman's new position with Dorothy Gray, Ltd. of New York as sales manager. Some of us have known for some time about this wonderful advancement about which Don is most enthusiastic, but we had to pledge ourselves to secrecy until the time was ripe for breaking out the hot release. Don left Tussy Cosmetiques, where he was merchandise manager for the past five years and sales manager, to take this new position.

Austin Baker was recently promoted from manager of the Wellesley National Bank of Wellesley, Mass., to assistant vice president. Austin joined the bank in January 1956' after having gained valuable experience in a varied business career in the wool trade. He resides with his wife in Newtonville, Mass.

Some of the gang refuse to be outdone in stumping at the numerous business, alumni and civic functions annually held during the winter months. Dr. Dusty Rodes, President of Bradley University, recently was the principal speaker at a dinner held by the Bradley Alumni Club of Springfield, Ill.

Ed Anderberg, assistant manager of the White Plains, N.Y., office of the New York Stock Exchange house of Shields and Company, recently addressed the Ladies Guild Club of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer at Mt. Kisco, N.Y., on the subject of "The New York Stock Exchange and You." His talk was illustrated by a documentary film entitled "Working Dollars." Before assuming his present post, Ed served three years on the U.S. Tariff Commission and was U. S. Consul in China, Japan and Jamaica from 1945 to 1954.

This is also the time of year that balmy southern climates lure vacationers from the wintry weather of this part of the country. Bruce and Kathy Friedlich recently spent ten days in the Virgin Islands. Frank andSue Hall just returned from two weeks in Florida. Lucky people!

CLUB BY-LINES: The Dartmouth Club of New York News recently reported that FelixLilienthal was Vice Chairman of the 1957 Travelers Aid Appeal for New York City and that Bob Koenig was on hand for the celebration of the traditional Dartmouth night last October. The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Long Island News reported BillSteel and his family among the attendants at the very successful annual beach party at Gilgo Beach last June.

Treasurer Stu Steffey recently circularized a final dues plug, which undoubtedly elicited a good response. At the time of his letter about half of the class had paid their dues. Let's make it 100%!.

I goofed, folks! The deadline for my class notes for the February issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE slipped by me. That is grounds for impeachment. All I can do is extend my apologies to all of you for this delinquency, ask your forgiveness and assure you that it will not happen again.
