On January 14, 1949 at the French Embassy in Washington, D. C., the French Ambassador conferred on Frank Drake a decoration making him a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur deFrance in recognition of many years of service by him to France.
"Duckie" writes that he spent last September, October and November visiting England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Switzerland, with a short trip to Italy. He says, "I spent ten days of that time in Germany, talking with General Clay and other United States Government officials who have on their hands the almost impossible job of administering the American zone in Germany. On the whole, I found those countries in better shape than they were in the fall of 1947 when I last visited them. It was quite evident that the benefits under the Marshall Plan are being effective."
"Duckie" has recently returned from a business trip to Venezuela and visited Colombia, Trinidad and Barbados en route, which reminds me pleasantly of a trip I once took on the Georgic.
Dr. Jim Huntington, who has carried on a large obstetrical practice for years in Boston, Hadley tells me, has at last sort of semi-retired, which makes me feel better in my retirement, as when I saw Jim last in Hanover he sort of pooh-poohed the idea. Jim is the author of numerous monographs on obstetrics and has had an operation named after him. This "Huntington operation'' was recently in the public news from London, where it was used successfully in saving a mother's life.
I have received news from Hanover that Albert Wells has moved from Evanston, Ill. to Altus, Ark., and Harry Warner has settled in Temple City, Calif., after being many years in Seattle.
